North Summit of Pass Mountain: Saturday, January 31

Just about everyone has hiked the Pass Mountain Trail in Usery Park, and most have followed the "unmaintained" trail the last 0.3 miles to the South summit. But have you ever been to the North summit? It's the high point of the mile-long ridge that makes up Pass Mountain, but it receives relatively few visitors for one very good reason: there's no trail!

I first made this 0.75 mile boulder hop/cactus-whack/scramble about 4 years ago to install a summit register. Since then I've been back nine more times, and from the entries in the register the route appears to be growing in popularity. Come and experience this very pretty off-trail hike before they pave it and put concrete stairs and railings in! Great views of the Usery and Goldfield Mountains, as well as the Supers and Four Peaks.

This hike is best started at daybreak, which isn't hard at this time of year and for such a local venue! Total distance is about 5.2 miles RT, with a total elevation gain (including some ups and downs along the way) of about 1500 feet.

I've done this one last year I plan on being back. When I went the Four Peaks were covered in clouds and that was very disapointing. I thought it was a very cool mountain to do.

The figures are for the entire route--up Wind Cave to the ridge and across the ridge to the North summit, and back.

I'm planning to be at the Wind Cave trailhead at 7am on Saturday for this hike. Will anyone be joining me? I expect it to take about 4 hours round trip if the pace is left to me.
