I would agree most of us don't need motivation to get out and hike. I just love that with this contest, the contestants get rewarded for doing something they love.

Superstition Wilderness Trails West
It is the follow up to Superstition Wilderness Trails East and Hiker�s Guide to the Superstition Wilderness. You can buy the new guide here -

I just received the annual email from GCNP River District regarding the lottery, opened today, for non commercial river trips in 2013. I did this last year and won a permit for this year (a Sept. launch date). If you win, and post it up on GCPBA website and also their yahoo group, you'll be able to find people to go with you and to help organize your trip.

The 2013 Main Lottery is now accepting applications for 449 calendar year 2013 noncommercial river trips. Lottery applications will be accepted through noon MST on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, and the lottery drawing will take place by the end of that week. Applicants can log in after Friday, February 24, 2012 to find out if they won.

Lottery winners will have until noon MST on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 to pay their trip deposits ($400 for standard sized trips, $200 for small sized trips).

A list of the available launch dates can be found at http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/cancelled-dates.htm

Additionally, the following 2012 launch dates were previously released in follow-up lotteries and were not claimed. They are currently available outside of the lottery system to the first live caller to 1-800-959-9164 (i.e. cannot be claimed by leaving a message).

February 2012: 3
March 2012: 1, 3, 4

About how long a hike are you looking for? I find I like a hike 8-10 miles long; however, I really liked the 14 mile hike I put in a couple weeks ago.

Next time you have a hike you're interested in trying, put it up here as an event. If people are available they'll sign up. Really friendly group here.

Beckett, before my disability (Rt. leg amputated below the knee. Lft. foot 1/2 amputated) I liked to hike Aztec Peak/Workman Creek area also little dry washes in & around the desert near Bartlett Lake & Horseshoe Dam. I enjoyed finding areas where there was little sign of others before me rather than developed campgrounds. Now I'm not sure how much exploring I can put up with! I do have prosthesis for the leg & the foot. I'll be damned if I'm giving up hiking over a couple of little inconveniences like these!

Yeah, didn't mean to totally discourage you, but that's my take on it. And as for learning a language, after years of classes, and talking to Mexicans a lot in Arizona, I still am nowhere near fluent. It takes a long time to get good at it, unless you are particularly gifted at languages.

Have you been to Fiuggi Fonte, south of Rome? I stayed there one time for 3 months. It's a small town, known for its mineral water, Fiuggi water, which is bottled and sold, and its resorts with mineral baths.

Yeah it doesn't sound all that great there and it sounds like American prices at that. Heck as cheap as housing is in AZ I could just move back there.

Hoping to make it to Albania this summer. I haven't been to a European place yet that hasn't spoke more English in Italy. Sadly (if you can say that) we have traveled as much outside of Italy as in it that my Italian is pretty limited to ordering food, normal greeting and getting gas.

You could also live on your pension in a small town in Arizona. Small town living is cheaper than in the big city. Of course, not very glamorous or exotic.

I personally would not want to live in Costa Rica for years. You always have to watch your belongings. Any woman who looks halfway sexy gets constant catcalls. And despite all its beauty, it's still a "developing" country. (What a ridiculous, imperialistic Anglo-centric euphemism that is!) The laundry list is long: poverty and trash and potholes in the roads and open sewers and beggars. It's noisy and dirty. And in the place I just visited yesterday, the beach town of Jac�, there were all those things, plus too many Americans and other foreigners, and American prices for everything. I paid more than 10 bucks to eat two fish tacos yesterday in Jac�. And we were admonished by a gentleman on the bus that we should not remain after dark, that street crime is very bad at night on the main drag there.

On the other hand most of the folks you meet are very friendly. But you'll be at a distinct disadvantage if you don't speak Spanish. Despite what you may have heard, most people in Costa Rica do not speak English. Only in the most touristy places will you find very many who do. (Which is why you may have heard that a lot of folks speak English here. It just simply is not so.) It would be a real pain in the neck to figure out where to find where the bus stops for a particular location, and at what time, or where do I rent lockers, or any of a host of other things I might ask a random person. I speak Spanish constantly, all day long.

But you have been used to living in a foreign country, so maybe it would work for you. I'm very glad to be here and to have this fantastic opportunity, but I would not want to stay for years.

My back has been hurting for the last couple days but I did not let that stop me. I was able to do a short 5 mile hike but put in some good elevation. My back still hurts but I'm glad I got out and enjoyed this beautiful day!

I would suggest checking both Panama and Costa Rica. More people are choosing Panama these days, I've heard, although there are about 20,000 American expats in Costa Rica, as I recall. Panama is supposed to be a little less Third Worldish, has much better roads, and is a lot cheaper. They use American money.

Costa Rica is not super-cheap. You can find cheap places, but they will be up in the mountains. If you want a cheap place at the beach be prepared for living around a lot of poor people. The places where Americans live that are near the beach are expensive.

Where I am, in Puntarenas, there are very few Americans. It's a beach town and it's an important port. It's kind of scruffy, but mostly the people are friendly. But to buy a house here I think would not be super cheap.

Very nice Elizabeth, my wife spent a month in Costa Rica in high school. We still need to visit. I've been joking with the wife about retiring in Central America. Just trying to find a place we could actually live of a military pension without having to work.

One of my sons has probably slept indoors less than 10% of the time over the past 2 or 3 years, and now lives in a tipi in Oregon. But people like him never compete in bag night contests! They don't get on the internet a lot!

Well I didn't do a very good job keeping this updated last year. We made it to Cannes, France. Monte Carlo, Monaco for the Grand Prix over Memorial Day. Went to Germany and saw the Eagles nest in July along with kicking but in softball. 32-0 last year. Spent a few weeks in Iceland courtesy of the Air Force, amazing trip. Went to Belgrade, Serbia and enjoyed it thoroughly as well. Came back and went to England to watch the bears game and then on to the Cannary Islands. Visited a couple Christmas Markets in Croatia, Austria, Slovenia and Italy. Spent a few week in California for some training. Went to San Fran, and Sierra Nevada Brewery.

I'm sure I'm forgetting tons of stuff, fought a major campaign on Libya from my Base. We didn't shut down from the kickoff in March till November 1st. 24-7 7 days a week. I hope this year brings even more travel and maybe even a hike or two.....yeah wishful thinking I know.

Thanks Trish for putting this together. It's a great little Loop that isn't overwhelming length or elevation-wise. It was great to go to an area I had only seen in trip reports and photos.

I had only been doing elevation hikes the last 3 weekends so I was hoping I would be able to manage this longer hike and I did. This hike, of course, was made even more fun with the company. And thx Trish for that chocolate covered raspberry PEEP. It was so yummy and I think it is one of the reasons I got a pep in my step those last few miles.

Congrats to Michelle for getting through this one. There were times when you amazed me as I know you were wasted toward the end. And Linda, you go girl. You kicked a little pumpkin out there too.

Ambika, thx for keeping me company while I enjoyed a no-pressure Tibbermode day. Trish was out on point and was kind enough to wait for us at the junctions.

It was great to re-visit some old territory and make an acquaintance with some new. I think we'll have at least a 4-part video so we can re-live our wonderful day.

14.5 miles is a big accomplishment for a day hike. Kudos to you for doing this! I know you were hurting on that last 3 miles but you did it!!!! YAHOO!

Saw places in the Superstitions that I've never seen before. Always nice to see and do something new.
Yes, a wonderful day in the Sups.

Weather perfect not hot, not cold. Little overcast but that was nice too. Not sure how good that was for the Photographers though. Didn't see many early flowers. Couple starting here and there.
I think Ambika, Angela and Trish found lots of things to take pictures of though.

Little stiff today but not as much as I expected after not being out for a while. It is a good ache/stiffness, if there is such a thing.

Was real nice day and hiking with you all.

Adventure filled full day into evening hike in the Supes. Didn't leave the TH until 8 AM....there was some kind of SAR training event going on at the Peralta Elementary School and lots of traffic on lower Peralta Road causing some delays. Made Miner's Summit by 11:00 where it seems we ran into EVERYONE hiking in the Supes today......a nice group of older ladies from Scottsdale doing Bluff Springs Loop and another really large group. Headed down Whiskey Springs and reached Red Tanks Junction at 12:15. Lunch and then Red Tanks to Dutchman trail at 1:45. Ran into Wendy and the ABC crew here. Bluff Springs at 3:45. Terrapin at 4:30. Hit this section of Bluff Springs at prime photo-op time with Weaver's Needle basked in late afternoon sunlight. Slow going out the remainder and came down Cardiac Hill with headlamps. Back to Peralta at 6:30.

Day started off cloudy but by 3 PM blue sky appeared so it was a perfect hiking day. There's some water in Labarge Creek (some of green scummy), pockets of water here and there, water at Labarge Spring, Bluff Spring was dry. Didn't see another soul on Whiskey Springs and Red Tanks until we got closer to Labarge Spring, then only saw maybe 3 people on the way out. I think Angela's GPS registered 14.5 miles total.

Anybody hike with disabled companions or know of any groups that cater to us? I don't really want to go alone sometimes. Thanks.

I have a pair of Raichle, heavy duty hiking boots, size 13. They are old but in almost new condition, no visible wear on the vibram soles. I paid ~$100 for them but they just don't fit. They probably need to be broken in, but given the fit problems, I'm not going to do it. If interested at any price, send me a PM and I'll send photos.
