Whew, thank God we got that worked out. This is taxing my "leadership-lite" role.

Seriously, I'm glad you're coming, sorry for any confusion I caused.

OK I'm getting excited now. Will work up the food stuff this week. Safeway had a good special on some steaks so those are in the freezer. Will augment with some chicken for the non-red-meat folks. Will also probably make up a batch of ice cream to freeze up in advance, and will make a batch there just for "effect." As I recall the last time we had ice cream there were no left overs.

I have 3 camping hammocks not including my son's who will join my hikes when he is around 4-5
this hammock is homemade and will fit a child up to 100lbs and/or 4' tall

Wesley enjoys playing in my hammocks so I made it for him.

My favorite is my diy Bridge (the brown one) that is used for a 4 season shelter. I can sleep in it warm and dry down to about 20° with the gear I have. this is a serious shelter that will handle constant 40mph winds and full on rain. If It wasnt reliable, or comfortable I wouldnt use it.

I did Shawn. But then I read your post, and felt guilty because it sounded like I was jumping to the front of a line and taking someone's spot/bed. I certainly didn't want to do that!

If I'm not taking anyone else's bed, and everyone that wants to go has a chance to go, then I really want to go.

Mike's got a really cool set up for his hammock, with a large tarp as well which kept him dry while he snoozed through afternoon showers while we spent a night at Chevelon Creek

Do you have a rain tarp for the precipitation that protects or do you have some other method ?

as a last minute offer to hike Kendrick Peak and camp at or near the small cabin at the top. Campsite elevation will likely see rain, it is at 10K feet and you will have to pack in all of your water.
Leaving Ftn Hills and driving the back roads thru Happy Jack and on to flagstaff. Much more scenic and enjoyable this way.

depart sat morn of aug 9th and return sun aftnernoon aug 10th.
5 members signed up on HAZ but I thought Id extend the offer.

My friend lives on the 8th floor of a high rise off Camelback(great views) and she saw the transformer on Camelback get hit and blow up. Their building has a generator, but most of that area was dark...pretty scarey storms from her windows.

I would love to go and could probably make myself available for a week if it was at the right time. I can do two week long events a year and still have days to take in between for sick days and long weekends... but my week long slots fill up fast! I am booked for this fall and next spring already......other wise I would have to do a four day with a weekend in there or some thing like that ....again, its usually the money that stops me from signing up .

Correct me if I am wrong Shawn but you don't have to go on a waiting list if you are willing to sleep in a tent 30 feet from the cabins? Is that right? We have a tent that fits three snuggly and two perfectly if any one wants to use it! We also have a good supply of sleeping pads and sleeping bags if any one needs...

A GPS is a fine tool but no substitute for good judgement and ability. It's like a fine golf club. Tiger Woods may hit a hole in one with it. With the same club, I would dig holes in the ground.

TV is on, AZ has to be the only place where rain is covered LIVE by the local stations.
Veggie tray sounds like a good idea -- Finger food to munch on when you wanted.
See that we already have fruit listed could cut some up and leave some whole to grab to munch also.

Menu looks good to me, you've got quite a variety/selection there.

Goats slip past security fence near NYC bridge
Aug. 6, 2008 02:54 PM
Associated Press
NEW YORK - It was a report calculated to send chills through those charged with anti-terrorist vigilance in New York City: Bearded intruders secretly penetrate heavily guarded transportation site.

But it turned out the would-be trespassers were goats imported by the National Park Service to clean up poison ivy and other unwanted weeds at historic Fort Wadsworth, a 200-year-old Revolutionary War rampart on Staten Island near the Verrazano Bridge.

Brian Feeney, a park service spokesman, said the goats are brought down yearly from a farm near Rhinebeck, N.Y., and escaped about two weeks ago.
According to officials, the dozen goats - or, as the Daily News described them, "weapons of grass destruction" - managed to slip under a metal fence separating the fort from bridge property, without setting off electronic alarms or sensors installed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to guard against intruders.

In a statement, the MTA's Bridge and Tunnel Division said the fence was not actually part of the bridge protection system. Because the animals did not get past a second, more formidable fence, the agency said, "there was no security breach" affecting the bridge that spans New York harbor between Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The goats were spotted by a human bridge guard, rounded up and put back in their pen at Fort Wadsworth.

Those wily goats are at it again!

Wonder if they had a real backcountry topo loaded into their Nav system or were they following street pilot type GPS. Its rather hard using the limited real estate of the nav systems to get a prespective on relative location. A good hardcopy map is a great thing to have and better yet its helps to be able to read a map as well.

Maybe I'd like it after all. I did remember something else--I fell out of a hammock when I was about 4 and had a mild concussion. Now I'm thinking that might be why I have that strong feeling about them.

man that sounds horrible!
I think the hammock camping is so new and rare and "underground" that most people (including myself up to 6 mo ago) never could imagine. Its just so awesome I kick myself for not trying it before then.
On the other hand, I keep running into hangers all the time. Josh, Tyler, Ken, Tony, me. (hoffman has also shown interest- thats right, matt youre next! haha) Its so unique in its own right but then every hammock set up is different. You pro'lly wont come across the same model, same under insulation or top bag, suspension etc...
sorry for ranting but I guess yeah, you'll have to try one. (hammocks dont make you lay like a banana, unless it is pitched wrong. The idea is to lay on a diagonal, and you will lay mostly flat. It takes a bit of tweaking to get it right since everyone is different.) there is actually a entire forum set up to discuss hammocks and tarps. Hammockforums.net (same guys that run Whiteblaze.net)
By the way, I print out all your pack lists and put in my file. I am going to get some of this gear one of these days! I'm going to now print your manufacturer list.

At my job I sew packs for forest fire fighters. The packs are pretty brawny and tough, needless to say. But recently, my boss was working with another vendor on a pack for hunters, made with this fuzzy camouflage material called RealTree. The resulting complicated backpack was so very heavy that I just felt really offended by the whole process. I don't know why, but I just hated sewing those packs! I hated when I was done with one, that thing weighed at least 15 lbs. totally empty! How dumb is that? And then they add ammo and optics and other stuff. Sheesh! Dragging around 100 lbs for just a day trip by the time they have it full. I am glad we don't have to make those any more.
