I have worked out my glitch and moved to the sign-up side. I also have a press that I can bring. Thinking Thinking on what to bring, I'll figure out something and post soon.
Will be nice to get away from the heat, or at least a lower heat.

Did I not see it or miss it but has the camping spot been decided?

OK, having talked to a few people here on the site it seems backpacking would make camping quite a bit nicer. Anyone interested or should we keep working on the car camping issue? Tracy, might you be able to do some reconnaissance this weekend if you are down that way?

I've only been back to Flagstaff once since I left Arizona in 2004. The area I grew up in is along hwy 89 in the Fern Wood estates area north of Flagstaff. It was difficult hearing the news about Timberline being evacuated because of the Shultz Pass Fire. Then my parents were on standby for evacuation for about a week in Fern Wood. It was unnerving to think the area I grew up in might go down in flames. Although, it was a relief to find out when all said and done no buildings were damaged. My dad told me that the next thing he was worried about was flooding. And it came with a vengeance! He said that he knew it would happen but didn't think it would be that bad. The Peaks got 3.5 inches of rain in 2 hours. Many houses have been damaged by the flood that came through the area, fortunately, their house was not damaged. It's strange seeing the photos and video footage taken of the area I grew up in. Much of the blackened area's on the Peaks have been washed down into the neighborhoods below and have stained the soil. My dad say's, "it smells like soot everywhere now." They had to fortify there property, digging trenches and preparing for the next flood.
I'm hoping to go back to Flagstaff in November. It's going to be strange seeing black mountains and seeing the flood damage everywhere. I just hope there flood-proofing holds up and I have a place to go and visit in a few months.

I will be backpacking in your neck of the woods. Winter Cabin Loop, but Wilderness of Rocks is a great place to hike. You can make a 11 mile loop out of it. Start at Marshall Gulch , Wilderness of Rocks ,and then up Mountain Lemmon Trail with a car shuttle. or add more..
Camping is very limited up there. I do not suggest free camping on Mt. Bigalow although there is some. I have just had bad experiences with the local high school/college party kids. Spencer and rose canyon are the only two campgrounds, which are usually full and cost $17 to camp.
There are a variety of routes, and explorations on the Wilderness of Rocks.
One of my stomping grounds!
Backpacking would also be an option for you which I have done twice and it is the best way to get away from crowds. You can camp by Lemmon Creek.

Enjoy..

Yeah Tom, the plan is to camp possibly Friday and Saturday nights. Don't know where yet since I have never been down there. I was hoping for some input from those who have for suggestions.

I know that the actual wilderness of rocks trail is kinda short so we can add to it what ever we want to make a nice sized hike out of it or leave it as is to make a short and relaxing sight seeing kinda day out of it. Again, kinda looking for some feed back so I know which direction to go with the thing.

For a couple hours tonight we watched a thunderstorm beat up Mt Humphreys. Lightening bolts, flashes, thunder crackling overhead, rain in the distance, the aspens shaking in the breeze, four elk running across the prairie all alarmed about something, coyotes howling . . . Words fail me to describe how incredible it was. Now (9 PM) its just a gentle rain.

Maybe we can find something that can be TR'ed after the hike. I'll have to take a look at my books.

Is this going to be a camping thing?

Starting to put together a plan for a weekend in the Wilderness of Rocks area with a hike to be planned for Saturday and the possibility of throwing a few ropes up some where in the area to climb a route or two on Sunday. Plans are just beginning and I thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone else was interested. Join us if you will if not we shall go anyway and just alter plans as needed! Awesome looking place and I have never been there so I am looking forward to it! Plan will probably be to head down Friday after work if we can make that work.

More details to come if anyone else is interested. Planning assitance is welcome if anyone has any suggestions!

There are still flights checking the drainages and washes. All we have right now are theories but 4 men are still missing (Jesse Capen in December).

Rest assured I am being careful. I mark my spare Beartooth map with my route and leave it at home along with a time to call if I don't return. There is water in some catch holes now but the humidity makes it hard to keep from overheating.

Also I was just told, they are going to need pin flaggers.

This race is partly a benefit for Summit hospital, so that is why so many volunteers. Unfortunately, it is no longer run by the parks and rec dept. They have Epic Rides, a race company, put the race on. So it no longer has that home town feel to it. It has the big venue of a big race--loud music, etc.
Fern Mountain is somewhere between Kendrick and Humphreys. Yesterday was such a gorgeous morning, hope you all enjoyed it as well. Five deer on the slope south of the lodge this morning, and a huge bull elk meandered across the prairie yesterday around noon. It is so beautiful here and I'm certainly enjoying all of that and the exercise. I've mowed down (chain saw) at least two work weekends of slash and round hauling. Fence fixing today. Life is good (so good I am afraid I'll wake up from this dream and have to go back to work).

Sounds like a really nice weekend and no rain. I remember the time I did it, you (hikingirl) and Jeanine were heading down as I got close to top. Rain was threatning to hit and we all headed down. By time we got down we just got into the vehicles and the sky opened up Big Time.
Looks like it was a perfect weekend for a hike

Sasha? I'm thinking it was a dog? Hope the little thing wasn't lost and left out there to fend for itself. Hopefully just checking campsites for friendly feeders. Glad it got something to eat and you didn't just shoo it away.

There is an amazing amount of effort going into this search/recovery.
Keeping the missing folks, the families and search teams in my thoughts.

What a fun weekend!

Despite the warnings all week that the area was going to be socked in with thunderstorms the weather was perfect for our weekend's activities! As Tom mentioned, it was cloudy most of the day Saturday as we hiked up the mountain but that helped keep things cool for the hike. Not a drop of rain fell on us all day Saturday nor this morning as we prepared and ate our yummy community breakfast prepared on Higg's new awesome Coleman stove!

The hike itself was beautiful with loads of wild flowers sprinkled every where, lots of wild strawberries covered the ground at the cabin on the saddle and the views from the look out were amazing!

Due to the fact that we are all a little older and a little more out of shape than we were the last time this hike was done by members of this site we all found ourselves "breathless" from time to time not only because of the views but because we were climbing up a mountian. Proof in the pudding that we need to pick up these hikes and get things rolling around here before I completely lose the ability to do these things!

We camped at our old campsite on 9003K (?) and had really awesome views of the Peaks and the meadow across the road which was sprinkled with wild flowers and pleasing to the eyes and ears until the neighbors got out their atvs and started running around.

We had a friend drop in on us from time to time who caused much speculation as to her status in the forest. We never saw her (Cujo/Sasha) with an owner and she looked some what scraggly and was quite skittish. When she first showed up it was dark and you could see her eyes glowing and see her large scruffy body but she wouldn't get near us so we couldn't check out her tags. By morning she came back and we could tell she was not the firece Cujo figure she seemed to be in the night so we changed her name to Sasha. Todd of course fed her from a distance as she seemed ravenous and she ate every piece of hot dog bun he threw her ( we were afraid to feed her a brat for fear she had been out there for a while and it would upset her stomach and make things worse for her).

All in all the weekend was a huge success except for the fact that you all were not there! Looking forward to more weekends like this one to get us out of the heat of the valley and to get us all back together again hiking and having a good time!

Now I will run over and post the few pictures that we got that turned out! Mike, if you would like to add any to the album I will put your name up there to be able to do so!

That is totally cool, George. I followed the thread on DUSA for a bit that Suz posted. Very interesting stuff. Hatt, Kollenborn, Carlson, very interesting.

Totally cool you got to hike with Hatt and met Kollenborn, too bad you all didn't find any clues. I'm sure someone will stumble upon something sooner or later, if they are actually out there.

Great trip. We lucked out with the weather big-time, it was perfect. Only a few sprinkles overnight on Friday, even got to see that moon both nights.

Hmmm, I sure don't remember that trail being such a huffer, but it sure is worth it once up on that lookout tower. It was overcast for most of the hike, but came in handy, kept things a little cooler; still got a little sunburned though.

Shawn - we were trying to pick out your location from the peak. A few theories were passed around. Hope you're enjoying the time there.

Thanks you guys, it was a fun trip.

SSAR was out at First Water TH on Saturday. They left about 5am. I did a hike with Jim Hatt to check an area for the hikers. We didn't find any sign of them. However, he did introduce me to Tom Kollenborn when we returned to the TH. Tom was sitting in the shade waiting for the searchers to return. (Smart man.)

I did a solo hike today up Boulder Canyon trail and covering most of La Barge creek. There is water in the upper and lower sections. I also saw my first buzzworm of the season. He was coiled on a log in the shade of a large rock. My flash scared him though and he raised a fit. No sign of the missing men though.

I am going to ride sweep on the 35-miler for Epic Rides/Show Low Bluff Tour of the White Mountains, a mountain bike race in Show Low. Sat, October 2, but you have to come up the night before and camp or motel. Camping is at venue.

I need someone else who is a pretty good rider to ride with me, since at least 2 sweeps are needed. You don't have to be a super-duper technical rider, but you do have to be able to ride 35 miles of single-track! So, fitness level HIGH, technical ability MODERATE.

The 35-mile part of this race has been totally altered over the past few years and is now mostly single-track. It used to be mostly FS roads.

Volunteers get fed, they also get a t-shirt and some swag. Camping is at the venue, and there is live music at night.

Two really good riders are also needed for the 60+ mile part of the race. (Fitness level RIDICULOUS, technical level ADVANCED.) There is also a 10-mile race on the Panorama Trail, but I was not told if they need sweeps for that one.

Please pm me and I will give you the email address of the volunteer coordinator, plus my bike email address. (Yes, I have a special bike email address.) TRACKS hiking club does the volunteering for this race. A part of the entry fees generally go back into the community, for the hospital.

I'll be in Tucson that weekend! I would love to join you folks, but I will be doing a hike on Mt. Lemmon to Wilderness of Rocks and Lemmon Pools, in addition to recerting my WFR at UA Outdoor Recreation club.

A gorgeous fun-filled summer is ending! I have to start driving the school bus on Aug 12. I remember a few years ago thinking Aug 22 was way too soon to start school, but Aug 12 is just nutso. What are these school administrators thinking, making kids (and employees) go back to school in the nicest, greenest, floweriest part of the high mountain summer? I think it stinks, big time. Shows they have no connection to nature or how people feel about it. Makes me feel sort of sick inside. If I were a kid, I'd ditch. When I was growing up in CA we went to school from early Sept to early June, not Aug to May.
