Oh, okay I know that road...but I didn't drive on it, so hard to say. It looked like it was okay at the beginning. Post a condition report if you get out there....

Is there a trail that goes to the top of the circled mountain ( not sure of the name)? is this reservation land?

Noted the rainfall station nearby is a little over 6 " so far for the year. Most of my camping areas along the "Rim" have at least 4' of snow. Quite the year so far.

Thought of you the other day. On Thursday morning I went out to my truck (parked in the "spot" next to my house where I have parked for 6 years) and discovered my driver window shattered. Snagged my work bag with the laptop inside. Big pain in the rear. Sucks.

Just a post in regards to recent conditions of FR 172..which has definitely been graded in many areas. I consider it to be in very good shape as compared to the last few years. There are the usual trenches in some of the drainage areas, but no problem negotiating them. The excess water should be considered right now for the couple of bigger creek crossings but not that big of a deal if you hit it right. Took me much less time to drive the whole route than normal.

Insane, I now have 20 people signed up! Wow! I am wondering if I should call the company and reserve a 4th raft, since raft #3 may be full by midweek. I have several friends who keep telling me they "might" sign up, which would fill raft #3.

Too bad all the hiking clubs can't organize some sort of volunteer watch program at the worst trailheads. Maybe they could, actually...

I had heard that King's Canyon was bad, over in the Tucson Mtns. but at least there you have the choice of parking in the AZSDM parking lot.

I copied and pasted the original post to a HAZ thread that popped up the other day, so if anyone is interested they are talking about it over there as well.

Seems like most of the Tucson area car clouting problems are at the Tucson Mountain trailheads.

I've had the BFG Trails tires as well. Worked for me since they came with the truck. Next set was Michelins from Costco. They did great and yes the set cost about $600.00 + and those were cheap tires and I think I got $60.00 during one of their Michelin special deals they run. My current set of tires is a Cooper Courser AWT which I have been told is a decent tire although they're not super quiet.

One thing to remember is that the best tires in the world will not wear well unless rotated properly and on schedule.

Next Board Meeting March 17, 2010, at Apache Junction City Council Chambers

Arizona State Parks keeps 9 Parks Open, 13 More Will Close.

The Arizona State Parks Board on January 15 voted to keep nine parks open and close the remaining thirteen State Parks in a phased series of closures starting February 22, 2010 due to six different State Parks funds being swept of $8.6 million. In addition, four parks remain closed due to previous budget reductions.

Parks closed on February 22 included Lyman Lake State Park and Homolovi Ruins State Park.

The next park closings will occur on March 29, 2010 and will include Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde, Roper Lake State Park in Safford, Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, and Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff.

The final phased closings will occur on June 3, 2010 and will include Tonto Natural Bridge State Park near Payson, Alamo Lake State Park in Wenden, Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, Picacho Peak State Park and Red Rock State Park in Sedona.

The nine parks that will remain open are ones that generate the most revenue back into the parks operating revolving funds. The parks that will remain open include Buckskin Mountain State Park in Parker, Catalina State Park near Tucson, Cattail Cove State Park in Lake Havasu City, Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area in Show Low, Kartchner Caverns State Park in Benson, Lake Havasu State Park, Patagonia Lake State Park and Slide Rock State Park in Sedona.

The remaining parks will continue their agreements with other entities or will be passively managed by an adjacent park. These include Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park in Superior, Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, Verde River Greenway State Natural Area and Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park.

Four parks would remain closed. These include Jerome State Historic Park, McFarland State Historic Park in Florence, Oracle State Park, and San Rafael State Natural Area.
If I had a choice for an all around tire for off-roading by far it would be the BFGoodrich AllTerrain TAs. Although pricey they offer triple ply side wall protection and an awesome tread pattern. There is no comparison between the BFG Trails as these are OEM tires and as we know all OEM tires suck, unless you buy a Jeep Rubicon as they come with BFG MT which is an awesome offroad tire but not the best on road.

Like you I find my self needing to buy tires for my Dodge Ram 1500. Not wanting to fork out +1K in tires, I've been looking for alternatives. I am now steering towards getting some Cooper Zeon LTZ as I have heard good things about the tire and they are in a price range I am willing to spend. The cheapest I have found is a Sears. Although they do not have this model in your size they to have some good offerings. Check them out and do some research.

Yes it should be fun. I have filled the second raft, have 16 paid people. I have not met ANY of them, or if I have, I don't remember. Most of them are from the TRACKS Pinetop area hiking club, except of course for Deborah, who is a fellow SAHC member.

So, I'm assuming the rafting company has a third available raft, if anyone is still interested. My daughter, her friends, and a couple other people who told me they are "definitely going to sign up" have not paid yet as far as I know, so I hope they don't wait until there are no more rafts left. I probably should call them to find out.

I bought Pirelli ATR Scorpions for my truck and it really made a difference in the ride. I bought them online from Discounttiredirect.com. Free shipping!! Then had them mounted for a decent price. These were the cheapest way to get a really good tire and a deal on them too, it came out much cheaper when figured out. Eliminates the middle man price hike. But that worked for me, others might not like to do this.

I agree that BFGs totally suck. I've had two vehicles in a row that came with them, and both sets were the noisiest pieces of crap I've ever had. Replaced the last set with a decent amount of tread still left.

I have always searched down the "best deals" for auto parts, but this time I went with one of the "best rated" tires. I'm glad I did and have been very happy so far.

Michelin LTX A/T2 from Discount Tire. They are $186 a piece for your size but well worth it in my opinion. Great traction for an on/off tire but the best part is they are extremely quiet on the road. I have had them for almost a year now and they don't show much, if any, wear at all.

Thanks again for all your comments and suggestions. I was told to check out Performance Tire in Mesa and will also check out Red Mountain Tire. The more I'm hearing on The Big-O Big Foot the more second thoughts I'm having about purchasing them (road noise, tire wear and soft sidewalls). I don't need them immediately but have to purchase within the next two months before I leave for a big road trip to Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.

Just looked at my tires to get the correct name... Sport King A/T (Not Road King), however (keeping in mind Sun Ray's comment about road noise) they may be a bit more aggressive than you want. For me tire noise or a harsher ride are of little concern, I'm willing to trade both for a tough tire with plenty of grip.

I'm on my second Ford F-150 and have been pleased with Bridgestone Dueler A/T as replacement tires. I want a tire that is quiet on the highway and these are. I became aware of them when I noticed them on a lot of trucks. They were also the recommended tire at my local Fletchers Tire Store. Good luck... so my choices!

Yup, I agree on the Big O Big Foot. I had something tossed under my car that caught between the suspension and right rear tire which make a nice circular slice all around the inside of the tire. I thought, ok, I have the guaranteed replacement, but unfortunately the size I had was discontinued... all these new tall tire/wheels now. Not being able to come up with a replacement, I knew I had to buy 4 tires, although I had over 60% of the tread still there.
After 6 more stops at different tire shops I gave up for a few days, running on the original spare (not a mini spare, just original size tire) even though it was smaller in diameter than the rest.

A couple days later I was driving along McKellips by Recker and noticed Red Mountain Tire & Auto, a place I'd driven by many times but had never "noticed" previously. I stopped in there with my litany of seeking the right tire. With a true confidence Jason said "this will be your last stop." And thankfully he was right! It took some digging and they have to get them the next day, but we came up with the best deal. Oh yeah, now I can't remember the exact tire... Road King AT something.
We had looked at them, the Goodyear Wranglers and BFG Long Trails, but what Jason said really made sense. He said that with the off-roading I do, I'll tear up a sidewall or simply ruin a tire well before the tread will wear out, so it makes little sense to buy the "best" ("expensive") tires.

So I got the ones most reasonable and was out last Saturday with them and absolutely loved them! More grip than the Big O's were when new, much more responsive, and best of all had much tougher sidewalls. (I cut one of the Big O's easily last year in the same place where I drove on Saturday and all there was this time were scuff marks on the sidewalls)

I can't vouch for the tires in your size Trish, because my CR-V has only 15" rims, and the vehicle itself was never intended what I've been doing or where I've taken it, but so far I'm happy with the tires I got @ Red Mountain Tire.

FYI, they are independent so they can get almost any tire, and coincidentally Kim's (the owner with husband Todd) family started Big O tires and she has been in the business for 30 years.

I would suggest you keep looking everyday! Slots are primo this time of year.
I am waiting for a slot to open at the end of March. I see the East side did have some slots opened today, but the people I am wanting to backpack with want to go in from the West. Hopefully, we get in there. It should be fantastic with all the snow this year!

Hey fellow San Diegan! Born and raised there! Thought about moving back there, but since it is so crowded it is not very appealing. My husband and I go hiking every day in summer here in eastern AZ, and if there is even ONE car at a trailhead, we will often decide to pick another trail. (And people still wonder why I moved up here? Go figger.)

I wonder if car alarms are helpful? I guess in a lot of places people ignore them.

I have heard of people using an old beater car, and sometimes not even locking it, for their trailhead car. There used to be a lot of problems in parts of Colorado. People said old beater cars were less interesting to thieves.

Here's an Alaska forum about trailhead thievery and what the forum folks want to do about it:

That is very good advice - that has been happening a lot more out here in Cali too. Another tip for everybody - put everything away and out of site BEFORE you get to the parking lot or trailhead. Thieves often times will hang out and watch, waiting for a good time to break in and watch what people put into their trunks. I have seen very nice cameras, lenses, wallets, purses and other equipment stolen from the trunk or glove box. It's sad we have to worry about our cars while we are out enjoying nature and peace!
