PLAN B GHOTM, June 28 to June 30
Tracy and I tried to pre-hike to Philomena Spring yesterday (Saturday). There is a “trail” of sorts, but we lost it in the snow at about 10,500 feet elevation. Not having pre-hiked it, and not being 100% sure that the trail we were on does indeed take us to Philomena Spring, we don’t think it wise to try to do this hike.
We propose for Plan B hiking AZT Passage 34, from the Snowbowl parking lot, down the Aspen Loop trail to the AZT, then north 6.8 miles to FR 418. Options to extend the hike include a ~2 mile side trip up the meadow for some incredible views (and lung exercise), a short side trip to the beach at Bismarck Lake, or hiking an additional 3.5 miles north to Kelly Tank/FR 514.
There are nice camping spots very near the AZT/418 junction.
Directions: North on highway 180 to mile marker 235, (10 miles past our usual turn to Hart Prairie Preserve) then right 2 miles on FR 151 (this is the north end of the road past Hart Prairie). At the junction, stay left onto FR 418 for ~1.2 miles, past the AZT crossing, to a small side road on the left (N 35.38461, W 111.71499). Turn left and drive into the camp spot.
The "bring your own food" plan worked well at Grandview Tower, so unless someone wants to organize something differently, let's plan on that. I will, however, have pancakes for the group Saturday morning.
Then we’ll squeeze into as few vehicles as possible and head up to Snowbowl parking lot and start hiking. |

the lack of pine cones on the trail was rather striking...almost like someone had already been through and swept them away!

These pines cones were on the other trail tempting Angela _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Looks like I'll be coming up Saturday with Angela and then home that evening after the hike. This will work out perfect since I'll be heading out for the Pacific Northwest on Monday.
So excited about all this!

Ambika, Linda and I are driving up from PHX Sat AM. It takes me 1:45 to reach Flagstaff proper if all goes normally.
I presume we are going to need to do a shuttle? If so, where do you want to meet up. Tonto can fit 3 more bodies but one (two very tightly) will have to ride in the trunk area.
and what time do you want us where?
I'm just now doing my Rx on the hike. _________________ Angela from N Phoenix |

Have to bail. I am very sorry but Todd and I have a huge project going and need to be here to work on it. We have had a lot of delays and we have to get done with our part before the final piece is delivered and installed. We are getting a murphy bed for the spare room and it is due to be ready any day now and we still have a ton of work to do. _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Is anyone still planning on going up on Fri and camping and staying Sat evening?
If no one is camping Fri or Sat, Ambika I am open to car pooling. If anyone is camping I'd plan on staying to camp _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

Michelle, we are still planning to go up Friday and stay Saturday evening as well.
We really do need at least one other vehicle with us on the north end (Forest Road 418) so that we have enough vehicles for a shuttle back to the Snow Bowl parking lot.
Angela, we can all meet up at the lower Snow Bowl parking lot at 8:30. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

Shawn...trying to get an idea of the distance of the hike. About how many miles do you estimate the hike to be?
Thanks
