PLAN B GHOTM, June 28 to June 30
Tracy and I tried to pre-hike to Philomena Spring yesterday (Saturday). There is a “trail” of sorts, but we lost it in the snow at about 10,500 feet elevation. Not having pre-hiked it, and not being 100% sure that the trail we were on does indeed take us to Philomena Spring, we don’t think it wise to try to do this hike.
We propose for Plan B hiking AZT Passage 34, from the Snowbowl parking lot, down the Aspen Loop trail to the AZT, then north 6.8 miles to FR 418. Options to extend the hike include a ~2 mile side trip up the meadow for some incredible views (and lung exercise), a short side trip to the beach at Bismarck Lake, or hiking an additional 3.5 miles north to Kelly Tank/FR 514.
There are nice camping spots very near the AZT/418 junction.
Directions: North on highway 180 to mile marker 235, (10 miles past our usual turn to Hart Prairie Preserve) then right 2 miles on FR 151 (this is the north end of the road past Hart Prairie). At the junction, stay left onto FR 418 for ~1.2 miles, past the AZT crossing, to a small side road on the left (N 35.38461, W 111.71499). Turn left and drive into the camp spot.
The "bring your own food" plan worked well at Grandview Tower, so unless someone wants to organize something differently, let's plan on that. I will, however, have pancakes for the group Saturday morning.
Then we’ll squeeze into as few vehicles as possible and head up to Snowbowl parking lot and start hiking. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

Looks like I will be able to make this one since Michael and I won't be leaving for our west coast trip until July 1st! Yeah! _________________ "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."

Angela, we hiked a small section of this on Saturday and the lack of pine cones on the trail was rather striking...almost like someone had already been through and swept them away! _________________ ~Tracy
