|
|
Ok it was decided today during what turned out to be the March GHOTM to take a long weekend and go to the Canyon for April's fun! The dates planned are April 26, 27, 28. Plan is loose right now but includes a two night camp on our closed road just outside Tusayon and various different day hikes that can be done to suit your fancy/ current abilities. Needless to say my current abilities are not up to my old standards so we can't plan a rim to rim for this thing!. Some ideas thrown about were down to Horseshoe Mesa, Down to Dripping Springs, down Kiabab to the Tonto and over then out the Bright Angle (a bit longer than most).... the list is longer and we are willing to discuss it here on this thread. We don't all have to hike the same hike but it would be fun if at the end of our hikes we all came back to the same camp and had a nice fire and some fun and food! Friday will be a driving/ social day. Hiking can be done both Saturday and Sunday if you'd like. Or! You don't have to hike at all. You can just hang out and have fun with us at my favorite place in the world! This one will be incredibly flexible! What do you all think? Let's talk about it! |

Does said camp ground require a permit or reservations? And can we have a fire? |
In 2009, no permit or reservations (first come first served) and yes on the fire.

Anyone up for hiking the AZ segement ? Passage #37 - Grand Canyon - South Rim |
Part 37 is 23 miles long... I presume you would want to do only part of it over the two days?

Wow! 23 miles is a long hike...but I notice that there is no real elevation. I think it might be something to do in reverse. What would you think of beginning at the south Kaibab trailhead and then ending at our camp site? If a group is planning to be gone most of the day hiking the longer hike into the canyon, I might be up for a long (yet easier) hike that ends with the campsite. I also really like the campsite Ambika and Angela are talking about. We have camped there before and it was nice. _________________ "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."

Yea -- I was thinking of a part of it -- we need to find a place where we can start -- any ideas ? Will need to look to see where it crosses some roads .. _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

It looks like if we start at Kaibab or GView, the best place to put a shuttle vehicle is at either of the Bike Route junctions or what they call the TJ (trailhead junctions):
From Kaibab TH 23.5 mile mark:
Bike Rte Jct is at the 13.9 mile mark (9.6 miles)
Bike Rte Jct 3/2 is at the 12.3 mile mark (11.2 miles)
The next junctions are at the 11.6 and 11.3 mark (around 12 miles)
By looking at the mile by mile, if you're only going 1/2 way from it looks like this segment is downhill for the most part no matter which way you go. How cool is that!
and then we can do part of it or something else for some miles on Sunday before we make that long drive home. _________________ Angela from N Phoenix |

What map did you look at ...looks like we can do either section -- me thinks we start at Kaibab?
Who else is going on AZT section ? _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I'm up for the AZT. Sounds like it would be a nice hike. _________________ "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."
