Don't have details yet just putting this out there to give people a heads up!
Gonna leave the Valley behind for another long weekend. Going to Pinal Mountains to play! Taking the girls of course so if you don't like dogs in camp this is your warning! It's cooler in them there hills!
DIRECTIONS:
In Globe, AZ, off US Rt. 60, turn at sign to the Globe Ranger
Station. Continue following signs to the Globe Ranger Station
for 1.6 miles to Icehouse Canyon Rd. (and Pinal Recreation Area
sign). Bear right onto Icehouse Canyon Rd. and go 1.8 miles to
stop sign (Forest Rt. 112 and 55 and Kellner Canyon Rd.). Turn
right onto Kellner Canyon Rd. (Forest Rt. 55) and go 2.9 miles to
the Pinal Mountain sign (Forest Rt. 651 and 55). Turn left onto
Forest Rt. 651 and go 10.3 miles to Pinal Mountain Recreation
Area. Although not signed, the Pinal campground sites begin
right after the sign and are located on both sides of Rt. 651.
NOTE: The access route turns into dirt 2 miles from the turnoff
onto Kellner Canyon Rd. and stays that way to the campground.
Forest Rt. 651 is single lane with turnouts.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 7,500 ft.
The campground is pack it in, pack it out. It is nestled in
heavily wooded, mature Ponderosa and White Fir pine. There are
some spectacular views of a valley and mountains from some of the
sites. The campground is an excellent location for hikers with
some ten different trail heads within a one-mile radius. The
Upper Pinal campground, with six sites, is located a short
distance east of Pinal on Forest Rt. 651. |

Hello everybody!
Is any river or lakes there for fishing? Just i want to take some fishing rods with me.

thank you for offer! but I have Garmin GPS. Is it Ok to use TOPO on this device? |
Kerim, this is a mountainous area and I doubt that the "streams/creeks" have any fish (or even water at this time of year). I don't know specifically where the group is meeting, but my guess is that those rods would be excess baggage.
Most Garmin outdoors GPS units will accept downloads from their proprietary MapSource software. Open a GPX file in MapSource and then download via a USB cable to the GPS unit. It's sort of clunky and that is why I prefer to use the !Topo software. I suggest you let the group provide mapping expertise this trip and then as you become more involved expand your "bag of goodies" for future expeditions.
You may also want to look at the HAZ website for specific routes and trails throughout Arizona....http://hikearizona.com.

Hiking2, I am not shure that my GPS is for outside using, becouse it has not long battery life. May be 15 minites or less. Actually I am using it in my car only.
May be it will be better to get some detailed maps of area instead of using GPS> |

I'm kind of on the fence for this one since I didn't get to do a hike last weekend due to the threatening weather.
I was wondering what hikes is anyone planning to do? Not that I can keep up on the UP but...
I wouldn't mind doing something that was 8-9 miles with not too much more than 2500-3000 elev gain.
I don't want to hike all day but at the same time I need to do a decent enough hike before my Glacier Park trip next week.
I've looked on HAZ for some possibilities but thot I would see what anyone else was thinking. _________________ Angela from N Phoenix |

Angela, there's Ice House Canyon, Six Shooter Canyon, Kellner Canyon amongst others. I've never hiked any of them but have read about them.
That being said I'm not sure if I can make it this weekend. We are doing a software upgrade Friday night and I have to be around on Saturday AM before our Saturday clinic starts to make sure all is working correctly. So Friday is completely out for me but if all goes smoothly LOL and there are no bugs LOL I may be out there for at least Saturday night.

Thanks Todd for the directions.
Looks like I will be able to make Sat, still checking on Fri though (that is still maybe or maybe not yet). What time do you think you'd be there on Fri?
And what time were you thinking for Sat if I can't come Fri?
won't sign up yet until I know what Fri is
Anglela I've never hiked any of these and just plan to do what I can, depending. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

I've hiked each of those trails mentioned by Trish and they involve elevation gains of some 2500-3500 feet. This is an area where no matter the choice of hike, you will encounter significant elevation changes through fairly short distances. Be aware that despite cool evenings, summer daytime temperatures can make the hiking somewhat brutal. Nevertheless, it is beautifully forested. |

Tibber, anyone of the trails in this area will provide a good workout. It's been a couple of years since I last hiked the area, but at the time the forests were deep and lush. I don't know if any wildfires have changed that. The tall trees can result in false GPS readings as a frequent occurrence making "heading" somewhat dependent upon your own internal sense of directions. Not to fear, though, since eventually you will come out on some forest road or other. If you begin from the Pinal Peak everything is pretty much downhill; but, there are significant portions of rolling terrain so that AEG is quite exaggerated. The area also attracts ATV and UTC riders, especially in the upper elevations where the FS road sort of combine. An additional drawback to beginning from the Peak is the number of private properties and other sections that make for less secluded hiking until you've descended into the canyons. I strongly suggest shuttle hikes or a loop which incorporates one of the FS roads. I did not find it easy to make a loop by "jumping" from the middle of one trail to another since you are essentially hiking up and out of one canyon, over ridges, and down another most of the time. The Sulfide Del Rey campsite provides a good starting point in as much as it is about midway up to the Pinal Peak and also provide access to Madera Peak via a FS road. This is a pleasant hike that provides good workout without the concerns of becoming enveloped within the forest. If you don't have access to GPS, Madera is a very safe bet. Good Luck! |

If you are heading out from the PHX area, this GPS route shortens the drive, bypassing the need to go through downtown Globe, to the TH (and at the same time passes by Sulfide Del Rey). If there were some way to upload the GPX file to this website I would post all of the GPX coordinates for the trails I have hiked...

as much as I want to hit the Pinals for camping and hiking, I just can't swing it with my upcoming trip to Glacier Park that I leave for on Wed. I thot maybe I could but with needing to pack, etc. -- I would fret all weekend so it's better to stick close to home and find a training hike to do instead.
I so want to visit the Pinals as I've seen them from many viewpoints but have never been.
So the Huckaritas will have to wait til we meet again.
You all enjoy!

hiking2, Thank you for all your input! I am not the detail person here just the driving force to get some hikes organized and get friends together! Perhaps someday you can join us on a hike!
Kerim, looking forward to meeting you and hiking with you. As hiking2 suggests, this is not an area most likely that you would be able to count on using your fishing gear. But the hiking should be awesome! If ya want water, look for a hike next month possibly to West Clear Creek which is a really fun area with plenty of water. Not sure that the fishing will be great but the water play is always fun there!
Looking forward to seeing every one! If anyone has a preference to which hike we do in the area now is the time to speak up! Other wise Todd and I will decide and plan accordingly!
There are a few more people planning on coming than what has signed up at this point who just havent signed up because they aren't 100% sure they can make it. Probably wont be a big crowd but should be enough to make it lots of fun! _________________ ~~~Diane~~~
