before Ambika headed down into the Canyon for the Thanksgiving holiday, she wanted me to post directions to the Trailhead. She also said we may have room for one more person. Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.
Here is the link to the map of Aravaipa Canyon: http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/az/aravaipa.Par.89151.File.dat/aravaipa.pdf

East Trailhead Directions:
The access road is not regularly maintained, and crosses Aravaipa Creek several times in the last 10 miles. High-clearance vehicles are recommended. Towing assistance is 50 miles away. Flash flooding can make the road impassable. Call ahead (928-348-4400) for road conditions.
Hikers from the east end trailhead should be aware of the parking situation. The wilderness boundary is located 1.5 miles west of the Information Kiosk and restroom (new trailhead). It is recommended that visitors park there and hike through The Nature Conservancy property the remaining distance due to road conditions and possible flooding. Open space at the junction of Turkey Creek and Aravaipa Creek provide additional parking options depending on flood danger.
From Phoenix (188 miles, 4.5 to 5 hours): Take US Highway 60 to Globe. At Globe, continue east on US Highway 70 to the Klondyke Road (8 miles past Ft. Thomas). Turn right onto this graded dirt road, go 24 miles to the "Y" intersection, turn right and go another 16 miles to the trailhead. From the trailhead parking and kiosk, it is a 1.5-mile hike through Nature Conservancy land to the east wilderness boundary.
From Tucson (148 miles, 2.5 to 3 hours): Take Interstate 10 east to Willcox. In Willcox, take Exit 340 north (left) toward Bonita along the Ft. Grant Road. At the "T" in Bonita, turn left and go 38 miles to the East trailhead. From the trailhead parking and kiosk, it is a 1.5-mile hike through Nature Conservancy land to the east wilderness boundary.
From Safford (53 miles, 1 to 1.5 hours) Take US Highway 70 west past Pima and turn left on the Klondyke Road. On this graded dirt road, go 24 miles to the "Y" intersection, turn right and go another 16 miles to the trailhead. Go through the gate to park at the trailhead. From the trailhead parking and kiosk, it is a 1.5-mile hike through Nature Conservancy land to the east wilderness boundary. _________________ Angela from N Phoenix |

Thanks Angela!
I'm going to keep an eye on the weather......it looks like rain in the extended forecast for both Saturday/Sunday.

Depending on the wather, my ride may be out.
If it is possible to catch a ride in with someone I still planned to go.
Sending Ambika an email to see if she still has room for one more, if I lose my ride.
I'll see how it goes and take it from there
Maybe the weather will hold and with no flooding? guess we'll find out _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

Hopefully, the 20-30% chances of rain fizzle out before the weekend. Those weathermen are never right anyway.
I think Tom is going to join us on my extra permit! _________________ ~Tracy

Ok -- back from the canyon!
Thanks Angela for posting directions.
I am hoping for a fizzler for weather. We will keep an eye out for it. We can always shorten our trip -- even down to a day hike if we need to! But I am hoping for the backpack for a few nights like planned. We can call the rangers down there to check on state of road.
Looks like we are back to full complement again! Yay! It will be good to see you again Tom!
So who is driving ?

Just returned yesterday, 11/27. The road is the best that I have seen it in a while. One of our group got her Chevy Cavalier to the Turkey Creek T/H (aka wilderness boundary). _________________ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Actually I spoke to a ranger from Klondike ranger station this morning and he said the road looks great. So I'm just going to keep an eye on the weather and see what it decides to do. Hopefully it will fizzle out. _________________ ~~~Trish~~~

Due to an illness in the family (our Miss Lucy), We must withdrawl from this hike. Makes me so unhappy but there is no way we can board Lucy right now so we are out. This leaves two spots open on the permit if anyone else is interested. Have a good time and be safe.... _________________ ~~~Diane~~~
