I am considering a moderate 2 niter backpack into Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness on Dec 3 & Dec 4th & 5th Dec
Plan is to go in from West side (Easy Passenger Car accesible) hike in ~ 5 miles & basecamp for Fri/Sat ; explore further on Saturday & Hike back out on Sunday.
Group Size: Limited to 10 ( I have permits to enter on Friday & Exit on Sunday)
Permit Fees are: 5$ a day & we will share the costs of unused permits if I can't get them refunded. Hopefully it does not come to this ....

TH Start Time: 10:30 am
Camp Location: 3 lons & fire ring campsite just across from Horse Camp Canyon. One of the tents will have arizonahiker.com tag ( Angel's tent!)
Directions to West Trailhead:
The access road is usually suitable for passenger cars year round.
From Phoenix (120 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours): Take US Highway 60 to Superior. At Superior, take State Highway 177 to Winkelman. At Winkelman, turn right / south onto State Highway 77, 11 miles to Aravaipa Road (at Central Arizona College). Turn left and go 12 miles to the West trailhead along a paved and graded dirt road. From the trailhead, it is a 1.5-mile hike through Nature Conservancy land to the west wilderness boundary. |

What about reflective tape? Pick a color and pm me, put a huge piece on someone's tent? Just a thought. _________________ Anne

I do know the second and third sites are bigger at Horse Camp. You come to the first camp site, which will have a fire ring, but it is small area. The second one is bigger, and if I remember, has tree logs around the campfire for sitting. The third is big area too, we can also spread out in that area. _________________ Anne

Ambika, looks like it is you and me carpooling then. Elizabeth & son will drive. What time would we like to meet at TH?
Or should would others like to meet-up somewhere and caravan down together? _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

Anne - we will be hoping to get the large camping spot just across from Horse Camp Canyon. It is the one we were at on the ABC trip in Sept 2009 on the right side where some of us put our tents up closer to the creek and others were nearer the fire pit and logs. If you can look at photos from that trip...
I have pics on HAZ from 9-26-2009. see photo caption too: http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=108844 and:
http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=108845.
If not, the only other one I am familiar with is the one before that where we caught that couple... well whatever they were doing. It is just before this one. I'll think of something we can hang so you find the right camp and let you know Wed or Thurs. _________________ Angela from N Phoenix |

Ok -- How about a TH meet time of 10:30 am - not too early but with enough time to find camp in daylight and have some time for a late evening light for some photog in the near vicinity of the camp area
We will hope to camp at the campsite with 3 logs & fire ring just across from Horse Camp Canyon that Angela has picked out unless it is taken .... We wil have some sign on Angela's tent with Arizonahikers on it so you know you are there ! _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

That sounds nice. Ambika I sent you a PM.
With the weather last few days was hoping it would warm up just a tad. Was thinking it wasn't going to, but the weather report says it is. May have some nice hiking weather
Elizabeth sent you a PM also _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

I was out at Aravaipa for a dayhike today and it was chilly this morning, but warmed right up. I used Sealskins waterproof socks for the first time and loved them! Kept my feet toasty and dry. Sycamores are gorgeous right now, cottonwoods on the west end are in the process of changing. Have a great time out there- wish I could join you all. _________________ Sirena

Thanks Sirena for that input on the Sealskin socks. I bought myself a pair for this trip and wondered if they would work as good as stated. I'm sure I'll like them, if they kept your feet warm. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

I think I am gonna go see if any of the stores around here have those. I bought some NRS Hydroskin socks recently, but they don't keep your feet dry, just a bit warmer. |

I also bought Wool liners to put under my sealskins. I hope it will give me extra warmth. _________________ Anne
