OK, we just learned about the updated essentials...here's a related question.

What's the least essential item you carry with you on a hike?

A compass. I often carry one, though not as much as I used to. But, I've never had a true need to use it.

For me, it would be sunscreen. Dont really use it and would rather have all the others than this item if it came down to it.

Probably Fod and Wter. Heard a rumor it tastes like chikin, but I've been too chikin to try it. I think to myself... myself I thinks... is it still in my pack? Hmmm. Maybe THAT'S where I stashed that perfectly good salmon a month or so ago...

My camera.

It's far from "essential" but I take it with me every time and I'd miss it if I didn't have pictures of every hike!

A couple of you had packs bigger then a small car on the dutchman's hike. You know who you are and you should be chiming in here.

I have a 5'x7' emergecy tarp in my bag. it's basically a super, reusaeble space blanket. It folds down pretty good and it's not heavy but I've never used it. I also, sometimes, keep a 20' section of webbing in my pack. Never used it but I'm sure I'll need it some day.

I thought I would use it a lot but I don't. I am pretty sure I have never used it... which I gotta tell ya I find pretty disappointing.... Kinda like the head lamp I bought a couple of weeks ago just in case we were out playing after dark on the lost dutchman hike... never got to use that either.... But it was a darn good reason to buy one! Very Happy

I did the same thing, Diane. I bought a Petzl Zipka the night before at REI, just in case. Finished the hike at 2:00 in the afternoon and never got to use it!! At least I got it on sale, and I have no doubt it will get used eventually.
