Shawn & I plan on hiking AZ Trail Passage #36 - Coconino Rim on July 11-12 with a car camp mid way on FR310 breaking up the distance into 2 days for some moderate hiking. Come hike with us for a day or 2... Very Happy

Location: Grandview Lookout to Moqui Stage Stop
Length: 19.0 miles

We will be hiking from Grandview Lookout to Moqui Stage Stop -- Its all downhill -- from about 7500ft down to 6800 ft or so. Northern segements pass through Ponderosa Pine /Gambel Oaks; Southern section is more scrub and grasslands.

Day1) Coconino Rim Trail: GrandView Lookout Tower to crossing of Forest Road 310 (9.1 miles) The road back to start point is 6.8 miles on FR310 ( so we can camp along FR 310 or at suitably located campground in the area in a nice wooded area - Precise location TBD)
Day 2) Russell Wash Trail: FR 310 to Moqui Stage Station (8.2 miles)We will have figure out car tricks

Camp Location Friday: GrandView Lookout Tower area ( need to be a bit away from the actual area) - We can plan on meeting at the tower and then go find a campsite ...

Directions to TH:
From Tusayan: Turn right on FR302 (0.8 miles pas Grand Canyon Airport Entrance). Follow signs along this road for approximately 16 miles to Grand View Lookout Tower
From Grand Canyon South Entrance: From Entrance Station, drive north 4 miles to a right turn on AZ64. Drive east on AZ64 approximately 8.7 miles where you will see a left turn sign for Grandview point. Continue driving on AZ64 for 2 miles. Turn right on a gravel road. Drive 0.5 miles on this road to Grand Canyon National Forest boundary. There is an old cabin at this point. Continue on this road FR310 for 0.8 miles to GrandView Lookout Tower ( Shortest drive on dirt road but you need a park pass or pay the $25!)

They require the "ancillary equipment" to be very useful. I found it a short steep learning curve, but well worth it. They are NOT a replacement for a good map, a clear head and a sense of direction. And, they are mechanical, they will fail, or the human element will confuse things.

Do we have a place to camp Friday night? Should we bring firewood? Will we be able to have a campfire? What time are we beginning on Saturday morning?

Quick update:

Friday PM : Camp near Grandview Lookout - This is the start of the hike for Saturday AM
Sat PM : We can return to our prior camp ( 6.8 miles via FR310 -- good gravel road) spend the night a Friday PM location.
Sunday AM: Drive back out to where trail crosses FR310 and continue the hike down to Moqui Stage Coach Stop. We will need to stage a vehicle at the end of trail here ....

Another option would be to migrate camp on Sat PM to where the trail crosses FR310 and locate an acceptable campsite

Continue on this road FR310 for 0.8 miles to GrandView Lookout Tower

I like the idea of migrating the camp for Sat PM. Angela and I are probably taking off Sunday morning. We would be happy to follow someone to the end of your day 2 hike to drop off their car and then drive that person back to the beginning of the day 2 hike. Just let me know. Will we be able to have campfires? I'll bring a couple bundles of wood if that's the plan!

I hope this is not going to screw any thing up, but we aren't going to be able to make it this weekend. We heard from Emily's Mommy yesterday and Em will be coming over to spend time with us Saturday so we are out.... I am sorry but I celebrate our time with Em.

No fire restrictions as of today -- we can have a fire if we have a good fire ring and EXTRA water to fully put it out. The area has a thick bed of pine needles.

I am good with migrating camp -- but be fore warned that Sat PM camp will be whatever we can find. There were some clearings where we can camp but I did not find a vey apparent camp spot ...Iam sure there will be some if we look.

I am sure Shawn & I will appreciate a ride back to start of hike on Day 2 before you take off. Very Happy

I can certainly understand that! Have a great day with her! We will miss both of you!

Angela and I are leaving at about 10 and taking our time to get to the trailhead. Ambika, I've PMed you with my cell phone number. Are you and Shawn driving separately or together?

So wish I could go, have fun and be safe! I have a camping trip that I committed to a while ago!
