Come hike the Groom Creek Loop ( Spruce Mountain) in Prescott....
When: June 14 2009 Start at TH: 9:00 am - This is a Sunday Hike!
Distance: 8.7 Miles RT
Difficulty: Moderate
Elev: 6400-7693 Elev Change: 1375ft...
A popular loop hike in the Prescott area; with a trailhead elevation of 6346. It is a steady climb up Spruce Mountain and back down. Great views along the way and from the top . Picnic tables for lunch!! There is also a fire lookout tower on top. The hike follows forest trail 307 up and over Spruce Mountain, going through large stands of Ponderosa, Spruce and Oak trees, as well as providing some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside (including the Granite Dells, Granite Mountain, The San Francisco Peaks, and three area lakes). No reliable water sources along the trail, so bring your own
I could not secure a campsite ( paid or otherwise) that I can put up specific directions to so ...
Optional camping Saturday 13th
Camping willnot be a co-ordinated activity -- There are many 1st come (no reservations) fee campgrounds in Prescott area. Those interested in camping will need to plan/ co-ordinate to set up a camp. |

So then that means that they are Spruce White Fir trees, right? _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

We need a little feed back about camping on Saturday. I'm hearing that the best place to camp is in the Mingus Mountain area. The problem is we don't have a designated spot having never been there.
Anyone interested in loosey-goosey camping on Saturday?
Loosey Goosey means meeting and finding the first available place.
Or shall we plan to just hike Sunday and skip coordinating the camping on Saturday? (actually not sure I can hike yet)
What should we do? |

Ok folks -- we have a slight camping challenge
1) I dont know the area for "secret Camping spots". I have no viable leads as well...
2) All developed camping is 1st come basis so we cannot book something and know where to meet unless ome one wants to head up early to snag a spot and contact us to share the location.
3) Group site for 100 is available for a fee (85$). Not sure if we want to go that route
Unless someone planning on coming has some sugesstions on camping spots -- I am inclined to make this a day hike with a slightly later start time (9:00 am) and set up a car pool from the valley....
Those of you signed up -- please confirm and chime in with your thoughts on camping. _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I am coming up from Tucson, perhaps with some other people, so more than happy to go up early Saturday and snoop around for spots. Or try to get some in a pay campground. Don't like the group site option. Definitely want to camp tho!
May want to do some cell phone exchange. |

Saturday is probably too late......people will already be on the road, I think.
What about the Granite Dells/Watson Lake area? Would there be anything there? |

Do you really think it will be a problem finding a spot Suz? I realize the best free campsites are further up the Senator Highway, like up toward venezia to Goodwin, but I bet we could lock in some spots at Wolf Creek. Down by Watson Lake/Granite Dells might be a tad warm. |

An option would be to go into the Bradshaws at Mayer, camp higher up around Goodwin, then come back out to Groom Creek for the hike, and then to Prescott and home Sunday. Just a thought. Can always tack a paper plate with AZH on it to a tree to let everyone know! |

No, actually I didn't...but I was trying to help Ambika because she did think it would be a problem...and perhaps she knows better than I do. I understand her dilemma. |

Come on, hang in there, we can make it happen! I liked the photos of the hike from Take a Hike, and am looking forward to camping out. |

I will probably just do the hike. I will be backpacking that week and don't want to turn around and camp, especially if I want to stay married _________________ Anne

Ok -- Here's what I am doing.
a) We will continue to work to find a campsite for those that want to camp. If we locate one, we can hopefully all camp. No food co-ordinations from my end.
b) I updated the event to be a hike on June 14th with 9:00 am start time. This should allow for a reasonable start in PHX and still make the hike. This will allow for all of those that want to hike to meet up at the TH at a reasonable hour and we can hike _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I'm would still be interested in camping Sat, if we can find a spot. Otherwise the day hike is Good too!
I've only been to Prescott area once for a day hike so I'm not much help, but I'll go on web to see what I can to offer a suggestion if I find something. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)
