The two routes meet at the foot of the ladder pitch.
A fun thing we would do would be to circle the mountain on Lion Ledge on the way down. This takes off following the West Route from the ladder pitch, down the first steep ramp. Then it is through the brush and oak around to the SE Arete, continuing to the saddle then down to the ranch.
Got some great stories from doing those climbs with SAHC. _________________ Mike Coltrin

Glad you guys had such a great trip!
To anyone that is a hiker, not a climber, and is considering Baboquivari: I climbed Babo from the east side 3 weeks ago not having climbed outdoors before. (I went to the rock-climbing gym maybe 6 times before going) I would highly recommend this- if you are not a climber it is challenging but totally doable and completely worth the effort for the exhilarating feeling of getting to the top. I filed a trip report in the articles section or you can see it with pictures here: (you might have to scroll down to get to the entry for March 15)

From what I read in John Annerinos's Adventuring Arizona, the Standard Route he talks about indeed climbs up the west side, and up the Great Ramp, which is the route Mike and Elizabeth refer to. This is also the route that Gerry Roach describes in Tim's link that he just posted. Annerino then states that at the foot of the Ladder Pitch, the Standard Route meets the Forbes-Montoya Route.
We climbed the original Forbes-Montoya Route, correct? This isn't quite the easiest way up since it holds more than one pitch of climbing (although we didn't feel that the second was severe enough to rope up on ascent, but we did rappel on descent). _________________ Mountains complement desert as desert complements city, as wilderness complements and completes civilization. - Ed Abbey |

Suz had the right idea: take some climbing classes, go in a small group and get someone to lead who actually knows what they are doing. |
Every once in awhile I have "the right idea". |

Yup, that is the one. That scramble I mentioned is what they called the ramp, which is a good name for it. |

Can you downclimb the Great Ramp without needing to rappel? It looked a bit steep in the photos I've seen of it, but also looked like holds are plenty. _________________ Mountains complement desert as desert complements city, as wilderness complements and completes civilization. - Ed Abbey |

Oh, absolutely you can downclimb it. I could have myself, but someone set up a rope and several of us thought it would be fun to practice that old-fashioned type of rappel. |

Here are a few more pictures from the climb.
This is a great shot! Tim's rope had a little static issue. Every time Brian threw it the darn thing would tangle up. So he would pull it up, flake it again and give it another whirl........I guess some ropes are just gonna give ya grief. It's important to note that rappelling on a tangled rope is an added bonus.....gotta stop, lock off and fix it.
I didn't drink that beer......I just held it, honest!
This is the link to Nestor's set of pictures.......makes me want to get back out there RIGHT NOW.....Holy Cow it was fun!

For the record Brian didn't flake the rope before he attempted to throw it. He thought it was already. |
