I'm thinking of doing this next Sunday, April 12. Anyone want to come along? ~16 miles, mostly down hill, will plan an early start.

PM me if interested.

Sounds interesting. Mostly down hill is my sort of hike; however 16 miles would be the longest hike I've been on in one day!

If I am in town, I would love to go. What is the starting elevation, gain, and/or loss on this?

Thanks!! I was wondering about water. It might rain on Saturday, so that should help with water!

16 miles downhill -- I would'nt worry too much about water -- Just carry what you need along and since we will be starting early we should be good.

Water details per AZTrail Info: (This part will come at the tail end of our hike)

Water: Water can sometimes be found at an unnamed spring near the 2.3 mile mark, a stock tank near the 3.9 mile mark, the streambed around 5.7 miles and in McFarland Canyon

If we want I think there is a bailout that cuts off the last few miles that are not remarkable (but fairly easy) but are essential to say you completed Segment #22!!!

You might consider ending the hike at the Cross F Thrailhead on old route 87 (FR627). That cuts out the Sunflower trail (344). I have hiked all of your proposed route (on several different hikes) and the Sunflower trail is a nice walk on flat ground at the base of the mountain but nothing to write home about.

You wuold have about a 12.5 mile hike if you went out to the Cross F trailhead but you would have to have a car parked there. From Mt Peeley TH you are going Cornucopia to Thicket Spring to Sheep Creek to Saddle Mountain to Little Sadle Mountain to Sunflower trails. If you want to dump out early then from the intersection of Little Saddle Mountain and Sunflower trails just go straight on the LSM (0.7 miles I think) to the Cross F TH.

I did a loop hike there yesterday. While hiking the Thicket Sping trail you will be hiking along a stream for the last half mile that is flowing very nicely. That's effectively the last water source on the trek. There is a weak flow on the upper part of the Sheep Creek trail that may not be useable. But Ambika's advice is the best. Just bring a gallon and that should be enough. Top off at the flowing stream if you want insurance.

As of Thursday AM
NOAA:

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 45.

I'm on "for sure" unless this changes significantly.

How about meeting at the Wendy's parking lot on Shea and the Beeline at 7:00 AM? leave there at 7:10.

What time do you all think you would be done by? I have to be home, before 4:30 pm, for family Easter. Thanks!

Well, it's sixteen miles, I hope to be able to average better than 2 mph, but at that it'll take 8 hours. Figure an hour to ninety minutes for car tricks, so if we are on the trail by 8:30 and it takes 8 hours we should be done by 4:30. Then we have to undo the car tricks and get back to town. So being home by 4:30 may not work. Lots of variables in a plan like this, we'd love to have you along but you be the judge.

The start time looks good to me. We moved our grandkid's egg hunt to Saturday. Being about 3yr and 1yr old, they aren't real particular about which day we play with the colored eggs. Heck, granddaughter was ready to distribute them last Sunday after we dyed them. Smile

Oh! I was working under the assumption that this hike was Saturday -- Sunday is soo much better. I can actually be rested before the hike -- too much work travel this week Sad
