I don't know anything about this group other than they are for protecting the existing 52 Mexican wolves now in the wilds of Arizona and New Mexico (Blue Primitive Area, Gila Wilderness, Apache-Sitgreaves NF, Gila NF, etc.)

These are the wolves that have been released, some born in the wild, some not. They mostly have collars and are monitored by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, AZ G&F, etc.
Contrary to popular opinion, the govt. didn't just go and release a bunch of wolves a few years ago and that was it. Instead it is a very fluid thing. Wolves are continually released, and monitored and if they don't do well, are recaptured and confined to be used as breeders. Some packs have done better than others. Some wolves born in the wild have done better than others. Arizona G & F has a newsletter with updated info you can get sent to you online. The situation changes a lot from month to month. So if someone has told you the govt. released some wolves a few years ago and they're still out there, it's not as simple as that.
The situation remains highly controversial in this area, with the average citizen being totally against the release of the wolves. This is particularly true in the area around Reserve, New Mexico. If you go there and say you like wolves you had better be ready for an argument. |
