I'm sure Suz has a complete trip report in the works, but I just have to make one thing public. Even tho the east side route is called the "Hiker's Route", the very first 50ft or so is very exposed, and to me, very scary. Although most say it is "unprotectable", we found a way to semi-protect it so that I could lead it and belay Suz on the way up. She gave the smoothest belay I have ever had and adapted quite well to the fact that I was out of sight and out of earshot for most of it (we used radios). When I told her what a good job she had done, she said Tracy and Ambika were better and that I belayed like a boy!?! Wha?? Guess that AMC course has done an good job with the climbing divas!

Then, on the rap down the west side, I did a poor job throwing the rope and the first thing Suz encountered going down was a massive tangle. Again she performed flawlessly, locking off with leg wraps and untangling, then radioing up to me where the lower protection points were so I could re-anchor when I rapped off. It was a great day, some great problem solving, and a great partner, thankfully with extra water! But that is another story...

Then we stopped by the Ridgeliner's camp for a minute and I have to say, Tony, that was some goooood chili!! Thanks...

Congrats to you both! The ridgeline was fun and I kept looking over at the Needle thinking about you two. Enjoyed chatting with you around the campfire that night.

You had a beautiful day for your climb. Glad you reached your goal, enjoyed and were safe up/down. Crongrats on your climb.

No doubt. That first pitch on the east side is a little scary. I climbed up that way the first time I did the Needle, and I went up before my wife caught up to me so that she couldn't see that I was soloing it. Then I got to a good spot just below the notch and threw the rope down for her and our friends.

Good job on the climb. The Needle is fun!
