Intererst poll for a "private Raft trip" some time next year
How many days can you spare to get on the river ? Private trips tend to be way more affordable than commercial trip. I am looking for group input/interest list _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Depends on what river and what time of year. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

With enough notice, my days to spare on the river are pretty flexible, cost is usually the issue that's kept me on dry land. _________________ ~Tracy

I would love to go and could probably make myself available for a week if it was at the right time. I can do two week long events a year and still have days to take in between for sick days and long weekends... but my week long slots fill up fast! I am booked for this fall and next spring already......other wise I would have to do a four day with a weekend in there or some thing like that ....again, its usually the money that stops me from signing up . _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Hey Ambika!! Sounds like a great idea and an awesome adventure. We have chatted about this and considered some options for me. I'd love to go and would be happy to work out the money and the time off....it's just not looking like a smart idea for me. I really need to be proactively focused and "all about prevention" now. Multiple days of total sun exposure even with protective clothing just isn't wise. It seems a bit like someone with known lung cancer continuing to smoke, right?
......I'm all about your photos from the trip, though!!! |

I'd be willing to toss my raft in the river and my "skills" as a boatman if the dates and river work out, btw. You thinking Colorado Lee's-Pearce? Diamond down? San Juan? Cataract? Green/Colorado? Salt? _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

On some thread Ambika asked me about private river trips. We have never been responsible for setting one up. We have always hitched a ride on someone else's permit. Almost all rivers require a permit. It seems these days most are done by a lottery system. Information is available on the gcpba web site. There is a lot of planning involved--the raft of course--someone to row the thing--safety equipment--food and a means of preparation and so on. My best advice is to hitch up with a trip to learn. If you find you love it then invest in a boat That's what we did. A Grand Canyon trip takes from 16 to 24 days. _________________ Shikekeh hozhoogo naasha.

You may view all 500 pictures of my Grand Canyon Float trip, July 19th-26th, 2008, Lee's Ferry to Pierce Ferry. It will save you $2300.

I drove past part of the San Juan this weekend, it caught my eye as did a few other Colorado Rivers. |

The San Juan can be a fun trip - the upper section (between Bluff & Mexican Hat) has numerous glyph & ruin sites, and the lower section (M.H. to Clay Hills) is more like a mini Grand Canyon as far as the topography. The best part about it is that it is mostly, if not all, a float trip that can be paddled by most anyone in I.K's, (which can be rented inexpensively) with the caveat that you need a waste disposal system along. There are several space-saving options available, though.
Or, maybe one baggage raft with a floatilla of I.K.'s might be the ticket.
Either way, in spite of its 2-3 'rapids', the S.J. would allow folks to gather river experience in a mostly calm-water environment before tackling the Upper Salt or the "Big Ditch".
My daughter, Katie, could even row (some of) it at age 11 (she's 18 now).

I drove through the Royal Gorge as well there was a lot of rafters and raft shops. Wouldn't be a multi-day trip of rafting but there is plenty of other stuff to do to make up for it. Royal Gorge also has a railroad that runs through it too.

San Juan looks doable -- We have 1 raft ( Page Rob) but need to figure out if we can rent another rig somewhere close by.
Permits are by lottery or by calling looking for open spots. Getting peak season may require luck but if we can look at alternate season I am sure we can find something.

Gotta watch the water level though. Some serious keeper logs can lodge up on the rocks right at raft level during spring runoff. A trip behind us this May flipped their raft in the Lime Ridge canyons. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

Might be chilly and the water'll probably be really low. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |
