Posting this thread to guage interest in
Cataract Canyon/Colorado River Four-Night Row Trip some time in Summer 2009.
If we get enough interest we might be able to get a charter for Arizonahikers.com! through Tour West ( or some one else as well or even a private trip if we can find experienced guides and some one with equipment!)
Where:
2008 Pricing :$860.00 per person + 6.25% Utah Sales Tax. 2009 will be likely a tad bit higher like everything else.
I elected to post Cataract Canyon vs. Grand Canyon since it is cheaper & shorter than the Canyon ( Yes - there are 3 day motor trip half-way down the canyon) and takes us to a different area.
Season: Early May - Early Sept
General plan:
Trip meets in Moab at 9:00 a.m. the first morning of your trip. You will then be shuttled to river where you will meet your guides, have an orientation/safety meeting and begin your trip.
The first part of your trip is a leisurely float through beautiful sandstone canyons. There will be plenty of time to swim, hike, and relax.
Fourty-nine miles down river you will come to the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers which is the beginning of Cataract Canyon.
Within Cataract Canyon is some of the most exciting whitewater in the West including Little Niagra, Satan's Gut, and Capsize Rapids.
The last morning of your trip you will be at Hite Marina on Lake Powell. From here you have the option to either fly back to Moab by charter plane, or have your vehicle shuttled from Moab.
I have set up sign ups for Interest with Cataract Canyon & Grand Canyon. Heck -- I will always float the canyon anyday if I can get a fun group to go with! _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Have you considered putting together a private trip? A lot of money can be saved doing it that way.
I have a raft and enough gear to outfit a kitchen. Should be other boaters out there....???? _________________ Mike Coltrin

Great to hear from you Mike - I was hoping the "experienced will chime in.
Yep- I know private trips are extermely affordable! --I'd love to see if we can do a private trip but I have nothing to offer towards leading the trip or for that matter planning for it. If there is a qualified guide and rafts ist something I'd be open to. I am ever willing to learn!
Now I will have to go research the permitting for Cataract.... _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I haven't been through Cataract or I could be talked into taking the lead for such a project. I would be happy to assist someone else's efforts.
Since we are talking about 2009, there is plenty of time. It might even be possible to get some more people "experienced" by maybe doing something simpler this fall. A Diamond Down, for instance..?? _________________ Mike Coltrin

I've got an 18' Rogue that we got out onto the San Juan earlier this year. I'd love to do a Diamond Down trip as well. I think me rowing Cataract is probably a few years down the road - some of those are supposed to be on par with Lava and Crystal in The Canyon, so I'll build up my experience before rowing that.
I am interested in a Green River trip next year (primarily flat water with lots of hiking opportunities) as well as an extended San Juan trip, both as private trips. Glad to hear that there's another rafter on here, Mike. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

I would love to do any rafting I can. Can't really afford a few weeks off and $3k to do the whole canyon, but trips a week or less I would love to join. Ambika that sounds pretty interesting, if I'm still in AZ I think I would be very interested in that.
Rob, if you ever have an open spot I would love to join you as well. Don't have ANY experience, but would contribute in any way I can.

Just how do you about putting together a private trip ? I think Mike admitted to being willing to lead earlier in this thread. Its hard for me to planning when I know nothing of the details that go into putting together a trip so I am looking for some knowhow ---
I have no raft or gear .. I have been a blissfully delighted passenger on my trips and I am willing to learn! _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

I removed myself since I will be mighty busy in May and out of the country after that. A raft trip will just have to remain on my to do list for a while now |

I might be interested in one of the July and later dates. Is there a "walk around" option for the really wild rapids?
Yeah, chicken, I know. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |
