In early July I'll be spending a week in Portland for a conference. I'll be finished most days by 3ish. If anyone has suggestions on things to do in the Portland area, I'd appreciate it!

You could drive to Multnomah Falls and do the hike to the top. I'm not sure how far out of the city it is, but it's an amazing drive.

Yeah, that is a cool place along with most of the Columbia River Gorge. I would go there and not waste time with anything else.

Unless you're sampling one of the fine breweries in Portland.

Or going to Cannon Beach State Park. Very Happy

Columbia River Gorge. Take the old hiway starting in Troutdale along the Sandy River. It's a beautiful drive all the way out to Multnomah Falls. Hike up to Angels Rest. It's a nice afternoon hike with a great view of the Columbia Gorge.

Also Forest Park, just minutes from downtown, is the largest park within city limits in the nation. Miles of trails and it feels like you're a world away from the city. Very beautiful.

Washington Park and the Japanese Gardens are great with some great views of the city and Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens.

Portland has a great zoo with open air concerts in the summer. Might be nice to spend an evening with some good music and a glass of wine on the grass (if there is a concert playing).

And finally...has anyone mentioned the microbrews? Portland is supposed to be known for them though I have only visited Bridgeport in downtown.

Colin,

Unlike here in Arizona, Portland will have twilight until almost 10pm in July which will give you lots of play time after your conference. YH offers some good suggestions. For more ideas, pose your question here:

Oh, lots of good suggestions ... what a dilema to choose just one or two.
I've never been there, sounds like a great place to go. I noticed the micro brew places, Matt. Work companions and I used to make sure to stop at one or two to check out the local brews when we went on work trips. But the hikes sound awesome too!! Hiking in twilight sounds pretty fun. Wink Well most of you have already been there done that, but I haven't so it sounds intriguing to me.

Great beer. Gotta have your priorities.

I have a friend that lives in Portland. I went to visit him for his birthday a few years ago. It was a surprise, cause he didn't know I was coming up there. It was my first time going to Portland, and being a beer lover, I think I was more surprised to see all the micro-brews than he was to see me!

My friend got married the year before last, and I was in the wedding party. Luckily, I had 2 days of free time, so I spent one day at the coast and another day in the Columbia River Gorge. It was such a tease! I highly recommend Oregon if you have the chance to visit for pleasure. It's a beautiful state with a lot of variety. The one drawback for me is the amount of rain. I think I'll stick to Arizona, but I wish I had time to visit Oregon more often.

You're just as likely to see rain in Phoenix in July! It doesn't rain all year...

plus, only the tourist and newbs use umbrellas!
