We've talked of a weekend at Hart Prairie just for Arizona Hikers and friends. Neil Chapman, manager, has offered the weekend of August 15-17 just for us. This poll will be up for a week, if we get ~10 or more rather firm commitments, we'll pursue it, if not we'll release the date for someone else.

Hart Prairie is a very beautiful facility just west of Mt. Humphrey's. There are plenty of pictures in the gallery if you are unfamiliar with it. We'll have cabins (bring your own linens and towels) and a kitchen, so we'll need to appoint volunteer scullery slaves, plan a menu and collect some $$ for the food.

We can arrive Friday afternoon or evening, work starts at 8 AM Saturday, we usually stay at it till about 3:30 or so, with a short break for lunch of course, then 8-12 Sunday. We usually have run of the place till sometime later on Sunday afternoon.

Work varies but lately it's been fuels reduction, which is a nice way of saying loading pickups with tree rounds and slash and hauling it out to a clearing to be burned when it's safe. Good hard physical labor to counteract days in the cube. Lighter fare is wild plant seed collection.

So if you are interested and able to make the commitment, sign up here and we'll see if we can muster a chain gang.

PS Don't be expecting the organizational abilities of cruise director Susan, this is leadership light.

I've signed up as "interested" right now until I see how my new work schedule looks like.

Shawn, great idea and thanks for getting the wheels turning.

Not likely that I'll be able to participate but I'll watch the thread in case some strange and unusual circumstances happen. I'm back on contract August 5th and suspect it will be HAIRY at the start next year with NO English speakers in my class.

I'm sure you'd have great time as the team photographer, it's a great place for pics. We should have some monsoon weather in August I would think, which will make for great light.

I am signed up as "interested" and will switch it to a real "sign up" as soon as I confirm that I am not babysitting for Miss Maggie that weekend. My daughter has already asked me to baby sit for my as yet unborn grand daughter so they can go out for their anniversary. I of course said "YES" enphatically!

Shawn, if you promise to make ice cream again this year, I'll put myself on the sign up list. Wink

I thought trouble with that "C" word was a gender thing.

Unfortunately for me it is a "W" thing... you know that word that "Hooli" says we can't mention. Meeting with a Mgr this week and maybe I'll have a better idea.

Yeah, it was a good time last year. The slave drivers worked us to the bone, but the backdrop definitely makes up for it.

A few things to think about:

The weekend of August 15 it will be 110 here in Phoenix and it might break 75 at Hart Prairie. but will be in the 40's at night.

If you are fortunate enough that it matters, being this is a volunteer charity event, next year about this time that mileage deduction is going to feel about as good at the temperature did when you spent the weekend up there.
