Cold water needs a heavier weight. But I use a 3mm full body suit and a 5mm shorty over that (layering) to achieve the same effect. That way I can have 3mm, 5mm or 8mm options. Keeping the torso warm is most important. Extremities can get chilled with less negative effects.
An added thought here. You might be able to get away with 3mm in colder water if your out of the water in 15 minutes or less. A typical scuba dive goes for 45 minutes to an hour and 3mm would not be enough in 70 degree or colder water. |
Helpful info thanks bunches. I think I'm set. I rented a shorty from ALL WET scuba in Tempe for 8 bucks as the first layer, I'm borrowing a wetsuit jumper and jacket from Pete, got some neoprene socks to wear with my 5.10's and picked up some scuba gloves. I'll borrow a beenie and a helmet from Tony and I should be ready to rock and roll!~ (shouldn't I?) Plus a thermos of warm water--- a special tip from the scuba guys. |
