I have to face it, my pack is pretty heavy, despite all the changes I've made over the years. What do you use for water treatment? I will not, repeat, will not use anything with iodine in it. Talk about poison! But someone posted last year they have new tablets that are chlorine. Another poison, true, but at least it probably won't give you seizures as iodine can potentially do. If you boil water, that of course uses fuel.
Way back when, in the 70's, I used to sometimes cook over a fire. That is still possible in many areas, but isn't too practical in many ways. And then there are those who are okay with not cooking at all. Blech! I'd rather stay home if I can't have hot food.
So, Datura, what are you going to do for a diet to lose the 15? Oh, I see, you're 27. Sheesh, when I was 27 all I had to do was stop eating desserts and I'd lose weight! I eat like a bird nowadays and stay the same. Hip city.
Basically, back on topic, if I really want to lower the base weight of my gear I need to start by replacing pack, shoes, sleeping bag and tent--the heaviest items I have. I am going to study fairweather's info very carefully.
The Scouts I used to hike with did patrol cooking: One stove and cook kit per 6-Scout patrol, one-pot meals, etc. And they treated the water, didn't use a filter. Packs were very light, even with older gear. |

If I were to loose travel weight it would certainly be body weight. I don't care about pack weight. to much math. _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play. Somehow I feel my pack getting heavier by
1) Water filter 18oz
2) Jet boil cook system 18 oz
3) At least 1 nalgenes (since I will be carrying the filter)
4) And Febreeze...since Ambika will make do with 2 socks...
Assuming I was not carrying it already...
In Vino Veritas...

I eat really healthy I just eat too much! It must be my Cajun background. I'm starting out with portion control and I need to add daily exercise in. I'm doing Phantom Ranch in December so hiking once or twice a week until then is another goal of mine. |

Weight loss (bodywise) comes in two very simple equations:
Calories out greater than calories in,
and:
Results are directly proportional to effort |

For my last 'Canyon' hike in September I did something I've never done before. I weighed my pack...... ......55 pounds! For seven days. Naturally, I re-examined..... ..... all I was packing and concluded I still needed everything. Afterall, the extra set of nice clean clothes I would need on the North Rim when I celebrated with an awesome dinner at the lodge after a successful trip. Had to have my portable DVD w/ extra batteries so I could watch movies at night, and my i-pod to jam on serious tunes while hiking. My tri-pod for those serious photo ops, and with the exception of the kitchen sink, I considered myself a serious, but well prepared 21st century backpacker. Creature comfort counts.
