Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard were profiled in Backpacker (and perhaps Outside) earlier in the year as being researchers who successfully lived among Alaskan grizzly bears for more than 10 years. It was a big write up, with a memorable photo of Timothy sitting alongside a road, and a bear sitting about 10 paces away, sitting just like Timothy was seated. It was a great photo...
Anyway, there was a report about a month ago that when Timothy and Amie returned to their camp this fall they discovered several slaughtered bears, including the one from the photo mentioned above. Apparently poachers were after the bear's gall bladders.
Today it was reported that Timothy and Amie were both found dead at their campground. Apparenlty having been attacked by bears.
Anybody that reads Backpacker will remember the story...it's kind of a sad ending altogether... _________________ -Colin

Sad indeed. I just can't understand the arsehole mentality of people like the poachers. _________________ Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. |
