Had a campsite set up the past couple of days near Canyon Lake. Used as a base camp for some night hikes nearby. Encountered skunks, bats, ringtail cats, coyotes and a fox. Also encountered the common poorwill, a neat little bird that is very difficult to locate during the day because of its markings.
At night their eyes reflect light and they will not move to until you are nearly next to them. While on a night hike and noted their location, I crawled up to one and was able to watch it for a little while. It would sit on the ground and fly up to get an insect and return to the same location on the ground. After a while it was joined by some other poorwills and after a few minutes they flew off. |
