Second vote for the Gila, next would be the Escalante River system in Utah.

The Escalante gets another vote for me. How far are you planning on traveling from Glendale in the car, hour-wise?

Early May you could do Grand Gulch from Bullet down to the San Juan River. 43.3 miles, 7 day min recommended. That'd leave you another couple days to come out Collins Canyon. Water might be getting a little scarce, though. Beautiful area.
