We, Jamie and I, hiked from out cabin at Hickate Cottages into the town of Punta Gorda, did some shopping and sampled some of the local foods. Yesterday we visited a couple villages out in the rain forest, for the purpose of setting up some sort of aid to the village. Tomorrow we will take a bus and visit one of the local Mayan ruins. On Friday we will head back north and fly out to one of the Cayes to do some snorkeling and exploring of the coral reefs...
I'll be back Sunday night and will post a better report, along with a few pictures. Just wanted to say hi to all y'all back in AZ....

I made it back, staggering home at 1:30 this morning. I haven't been my most productive today, and I may head home soon to catch up on my sleep. Well, first I have to download the pictures from my cameras, and maybe post a few... A more detailed report is to follow, but here are a few highlights....
Even though we were the only white folks most of the time, I felt more at ease and less threatened there than I would in parts of Phoenix...
Swimming with 12 - 15 big sting rays was an experience I never expected. I even reached out and touched one....
I really appreciate the dryness here!
More to come....
P.S. We did stay on permit, but it's pretty informal down there. As the t-shirt says: no shirt, no shoes, no problem.... _________________ The world is older and bigger than we are. This is a hard truth for some folks to swallow. —EDWARD ABBEY |

Oh god, I love Belize. Went there when I was 17 with a bunch of other guys from my school. Stayed in bungalows on the beach, harassed each other every night, caught all kinds of fish (including a monster huge barracuda), snorkeled around islands with reefs that dropped off into the abyss, raced these little boats through the mangroves and swamps to trailheads deep in the jungle, saw macaws, monkeys, and Mayan ruins half covered by the forest. One of the most awesome experiences of my life. Hope it was a blast for you too, Hnak. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

There are lots more pictures to post, and a trip report to write, but I've put a few pictures up, just for fun. Most of these are at the Mayan villages we went to to see how we could offer some help. The kids were lots of fun. More to come after I recover a bit more.... _________________ The world is older and bigger than we are. This is a hard truth for some folks to swallow. —EDWARD ABBEY |
