So yesterday my cousin Jonathan is cowering in the hallway hollering about a bird flying in the office. I look out into the main area and see him and proclaim 'It's a swallow.' I go outside my office to see the little guy pull another loop and notice he's a little to rudder-jerky for a swallow. As he begins the next loop withing two feet of our faces and as Jonathan ducks into a wall I realize we have a bat flying in the building. A few more loops and the little brown flyer disappears into another hallway and doesn't come back.
A few minutes later and my Marlin Perkins instinct kicks in. I grab a office-can sized garbage bag and head out for the open territory of the office beyond my door. Jonathan and my father Mickey are not at their desks and I can hear some muttering on the other side of a far wall. There they are with camera phone on the aim taking pictures of the tired little intruder on a cubicle wall. I stick my hand inside the bag and brush past them. Jonathan says 'You're going to catch the bat.", 'Yep.'
I extend bagged hand, trap him on the wall, grab him in my hand, turn bag inside out. Voilą! Bat in a bag. No noise, no mess, no fuss. A quick examination of the little flyer and out we go for the release program.
We'll see what today brings to our office.

Marlin Perkins? That means you break for a Mutual of Omaha commercial and Jim Fowler captures the bat. I'm thinking more of a Jim Fowler instinct.
See you should have built that bat home that Ranger Pam told us about. _________________ ;o)> |
