This is a nearly 100-miles distance that includes a massive elevation change. It took me a week to cover on my own hike. So its fairly obvious he hitched around certain sections of the trail.

People can do that in less than 24 hours.

Ultramarathonman - Dean Karnazes

But it was 1970 and Ryback was carrying an 80 lb. pack. He just didn't do the whole trail. Simple as that. Good book, though, if you don't mind his lying about it. It bothers me a lot, though. (I don't like John Wesley Powell for the same reason. He lied copiously, outrageously and frequently. I can't read his books anymore because of that.)

???????????????????

has nobody read Francis Tapon's "Hike Your Own Hike; 7 life lessons from Backpacking Across America"?

I would say its correct when the assertion is made: "Who would enjoy this book? Anyone who:

Loves reading outdoor adventure books.
Has a good life, but wants to have an amazing one.
Wants to learn more about the Appalachian Trail.
Dislikes preachy self-help books, but doesn't mind getting some useful ideas presented in a light tone.
Is stuck in a rut and is looking for some inspiration to make important changes."

I plan on doing a little hike with Francis and Bernie (and maybe Glen VP)in the northern section of the CDT for a few miles this summer. Will be interesting, I imagine. At least reading his book will give me something to talk about.
