Night Noise

While hiking at night this past weekend I heard a very lound noise not sure what it was. I know it wasn't the cattle and the noise was quite similar to the noise the giant ants made in those moives in the 50's (Them). The noise would be in areas with a high concentration of oak trees mixed with the pine trees. No noise in areas with pines trees or aspens. I was thinking crickets or some kind of frog, but could not locate anything.

Could they have been cicadas? When a number of those starting humming it can be deafening.

Did not sound like cicada's and could not find what ever was making the noise.
