IGO, they have closed all of our national forests in Arizona quite a few times in the past few years, almost always in June. And they have always been able to reopen them again after a couple of weeks of monsoon. For example, the year of the Rodeo/Chediski Fire the Apache Sitgreaves NF was reopened on July 13. The fire was more or less extinguished by the end of June, and then the rains came soon after that. So I wouldn't worry myself about the August and Sept. GHOTMs.

Structures in danger as fire nears highway
Firefighters trying to keep flames from floor of Oak Creek Canyon

A 1,500-acre wildfire that forced the evacuations of hundreds of homes in northern Arizona’s scenic Oak Creek Canyon was close to reaching Arizona 89A Tuesday afternoon, putting canyon structures in immediate danger.

The Sedona Fire District reactivated its emergency sirens in the canyon to warn of impending danger, officials said. They also de-energized power lines running through the region.

All firefighting personnel was evacuated from the area as a safety precaution except for the most essential fire crews, public Information Officer Jacqueline C. Denk said.

Firefighters said they planned to continue an aerial attack that helped slow the fire’s spread on Monday. At least 11 helicopters and air tankers were available Tuesday morning to help to seriously slow or even stop the fire from continuing its spread down a canyon wall toward 400 homes and business in Oak Creek Canyon, said Joe Reinarz, commander of the team fighting the fire.

“We want to hang it up there as high as we can and let it grow low and slow,” he said Tuesday morning.

If the fire burns down to a major highway at the canyon bottom, crews hope to make a stand there. Most homes are on the opposite side of the highway, Reinarz said.

By Tuesday morning, the blaze was only about a half-mile from the edge of Slide Rock State Park and about two miles from Arizona 89A.

Heard on the radio that 89A through OC is closed.

89A up here, between Jacob Lake and Bitter Springs is also closed temporarily this afternoon, due to heavy smoke and reduced visibility.

Las Vegas was covered in smoke this morning. First the smoke was coming from some fire close to town but west of here then the wind changed to come in from the east and it brought smoke with it also; I expect that was smoke from the Brin fire. I couldn't see Mt Charleston from my place it was that thick.

I haven't read thru all posts but a fire on Navajo Mtn also, which may make it pretty smokey up that way.

I think (at least earlier) that the Navajo Mtn. fire's smoke was blowing East. Driving down to Marble last week, when it was still clear, I couldn't see any smoke coming from that direction. I'm still not sure exactly where that fire is though, in relation to NM. Are there any online maps of it?

Clear as a bell here! However there are some really big fires right now nearby in the Gila National Forest. I have talked to several people from Reserve, New Mexico, today--they are pretty nervous right now. (People who live in Reserve do most of their grocery shopping in Springerville/Eagar.)

I'm gonna go look on nifc.gov and some other sites, because here in AZ the news media likes to pretend that New Mexico doesn't exist.

Just like the national news likes to pretend that Arizona doesn't exist (unless, of course, its on fire and people are in danger).

Anyone know what the trail they've labeled as "Bootlegger" is? That's roughly where the AB Young trail is. Is Bootlegger the trail along the west side of Oak Creek that AB Young branches off of?

From my Topo! software it sure looks like that's right where AB Young is. The fire road 231 they have labeled, sure looks like the road to the fire tower at the top of the mountain there on the AB Young trail.

Yep, 231 is the road to the fire tower. Looks like maybe the new line will be along the AB Young trail up to the tower then along 231. AB Young starts upstream from Junipine Resort, which is labeled on the map, too. Maybe "Bootlegger Trail" is actually the AB Young. AB Young starts across the creek from Bootlegger Campground, so maybe they just got the name wrong.

The fire tower is on East Pocket and the AB Young Trail is also known as the East Pocket Trail.

Let's hope and pray they stop it there. If they can't, West Fork is next in it's sights. Crying or Very sad
