I like thin ankle high socks and for hikes more than 6 or 8 miles I use the thin liners as well. They work well for preventing blisters. Good fitting boots and good orthotic insoles go a long way to make one bister free in the first place. As they say above, this is an individual thing. They work wonders for some, my girlfriend included, and some don't care for them. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

Heather,
You probably need to try a thicker sock with no liner one time and a then a liner with a pair of socks over them another time and see what works best for you. I swear by a liner and a pair of socks over but that's what feels best for me. A good fitting hiking boot is a must!

I do mostly short fitness hikes (Piestewa, Camelback, 1A, Quartz Ridge, etc...) and wear an ankle high hiking sock, sometimes a thin Smartwool, sometimes a thicker Nike or REI brand, depending on which shoe I'm wearing.
Backpacking, I use a heavier weight sock and a liner. I no longer carry multiple pairs of socks, in order to shave ozs and volume off my pack.
Like IGO says, you can get away with just washing out your liners.
I like the Fox River Xtatic, which are impreganted with silver and really do suppress the funk fumes (and I sweat like a mule).
I haven't had a blister on my foot in years. I attribute this to wearing footwear that fits, and socks that are compatible with whatever shoe or boot I'm wearing. |

I change or wash my sox out every 5 days whether they need it or not, I feel it helps keep the place smellin nice. |
If you don't wash them that often you can just step into them the next day, and the next, and the next.... _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play. Trying them w/ thick socks, w/out thick ones and then w/ thin ones. I am definitely going to have to test them. |
