Well, I coulda told you that! Actually, I had forgotten all about it. I went to Natural Bridges a couple of weeks ago, right before my Grand Gulch hike. The campground had just been closed. Hikers getting permits at Kane Gulch for Grand Gulch area were also warned to stay away from any dead rodents. So far I have no unusual diseases, so I must not have caught it! |

Well that is good Elizabeth... Don't want you getting sick here. And there is another disease, I forget the name, but it comes from breathing in Mice droppings. High concentrations have also been in the 4 Corners area. If you go there, just play a Michael Jackson and wear a scarf to cover your face. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

I've heard that one of the few people to survive the hantavirus was from around here. I don't know if they caught it around here, though. Everyone in this neck of the woods is very aware of it, though. The outbreak was quite a few years ago, but someone from Sanders died from it just last fall. Sanders is about 80 miles north of here. It was a young man working in a workshop of some kind which was infested with mice. He then went off to Navy boot camp. He got sick and died at boot camp. Very sad story--he was Navajo, had a young wife and child. |

In my old career, I worked in group medical benefits. In the mid 90's one of my accounts was the employees of the Navajo Nation. I paid numerous claims on a lady who had contracted the pneumonic plague, even spoke with her a few times on the phone. She survived, but had a rough go of it for awhile. If I remember correctly, it took her well over a year to get completely over it. _________________ [/size] |

Well that little bit of news should keep the tourists home. Regarding Hanta, if I am cleaning up in an "old " cabin I wear a bandana to avoid breathing the dust. Also certain caves have a dry entrance room that can be home to deer mice, etc. _________________ You can rest when you're dead |

If possible spray the droppings to keep the dust down. |

I don't often use those old cabins, but the one time I had to I set the tent up inside for this very reason, don't want to be breathing in any super nasties. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |
