I have kept track in my mind where I've been and what I've seen this past week:
Last Wed, on the Big Lake Highway, 261, in the early evening saw a total of about 75 elk, 4 deer and 15 antelope.
Thursday morning bike ride before work at the new G & F grasslands area outside Eagar saw a dozen or so each of elk and antelope.
Sunday morning on the way to Escudilla saw 3 muley does. Sunday early evening at the G & F Wenima Wildlife area, outside Springerville, saw about 25 deer (mulies), plus two large and two small beavers in the Little Colorado River.
This morning on a bike ride around town, at and near Becker Lake/Little Colorado River area saw a green-backed heron, two mallards, lots of redwing blackbirds and a covey of what looked to me like white faced ibises! I went home, checked the bird book, looked at curlews, too (they are not a dark solid color, though, as the ibis is).
The bald eagles are not back yet--we have eagles living right in town, by Becker Lake, but they come and go with the seasons. |
