How about an ongoing log for rattlesnake sightings? Just a simple log of when, what and where. I have been hiking for around five years now and have seen a handful. Quite different than when we used to go looking for them specifically.

So far this year I've seen a large blacktailed rattlesnake in Secret Canyon in Sedona in May. I saw a baby diamondback and a medium sized blacktail on 109 south in May.

Sounds good to me. Here is the sighting I made this morning on H2 at Thunderbird Park and also the same Black Tail that you saw on the Secret Canyon Trail ( the one that Jmzblond found hehe).

Just saw one today on Camelback mountain at about 6:00am. I was on the rocks on the incline just after the last rail when i spotted it. I heard the tail and it scared the crap out of me. It was only a few feet away.

I saw two speckled rattlesnakes in South Mountain park on August 24th. I didn't take the camera along though. I've been back twice now with a camera and have not seen hide nor hair of 'em.
Also, about the middle of July I saw a 2.5 foot long Western Diamondback about 2 miles from the First water trailhead. Cute little fella!

That seems to be the way it goes. You see the most spectacular things when you don't have the camera. When you have the camera, nothing.

On the drive leaving the Mt. Peeley trailhead (FR201) we passed over a HUGE rattlesnake, I stopped & went back to see if I'd killed it, but he was gone. It was a conservative 5 feet in length.

Saw a 3-4 foot long black-tailed rattlesnake on Mt. Wrightson yesterday. He had just crossed the trail (Old Baldy trail) and was heading up the mountain. Also saw a black bear while walking down the road to where we'd parked. He was below the Chuparosa Inn but not yet to the cabins. When I took his picture he started heading towards me. I just raised my voice and he decided to head back into the woods.

Mt Wrightson sounds interesting but I heard there might be parking problems since the lot is under construction? Also interested in hearing more about the hike, trail, and ect. How bout a trip report--please Very Happy

I live out in Hidden Valley, south of the town Maricopa and west of the South Maricopa Mts.

Came home from grocery shopping around the end of may and found three dead chickens in one of my pens. Couldn't figure out what killed three all at once ... bent over and looked under their shade (piece of plywood propped up against the fence as a makeshift shade) ... bzzzzzzt!

SIX FOOT diamondback. I've never seen a rattler that big in my life and I'm a native ... It was very hot that day and I suspect he wanted the shade and didn't want to share with the pullets.

My dog also got bit between the toes by a rattler last month. I didn't see the rattlesnake, but the symptoms were pretty unmistakable. Smile He's fine, my credit card is still saying "ouch" ...

$350, plus my lost wages -- but that may not be representative as his was a fairly mild reaction and he didn't need antivenom or surgery, and this clinic treats snakebite regularly -- rural area.
