Reavis Ranch Backpack......Lots of alternatives; Hike in Friday May 23 and camp one, two or three nights; hike in Saturday and stay one or two nights or make it a day hike, etc. Think everyone who did this back in February will tell you they had a ball regardless of the mud and cold and should be even better conditions this time! I missed it in Feb. but ain't gonna miss it this time.
LET'S DO IT

I'll likely be hiking in with GTG and Messami Friday, but taking the Jeep to the trailhead. I may stay Sunday night as well and hike out Monday. Will have room for one other along with backpack.

Wish I could go with you guys, but can't quite cut it. If I can carve out some time, might try to make an in and out dayhike on Saturday. Will post here no later than Thursday night if that is a possibility.

One last thing: Make sure you have lots of water for the hike in and the hike out! I know I am out of hiking shape, but I went up Siphon Draw on Saturday and used more water than I have ever used! These last few days, we have moved into summer temps. Dehydration should be on everyone's mind right now. Keep hydrated!!!!

And it looks like Arizonaheat and I are going to make it out there. Right now, we are planning on heading up EARLY, EARLY, EARLY Saturday morning... terrorizing the group for a night, then packing out sometime on Sunday. Really looking forward to this... can't hardly wait!!

GTG, kurthzone and "Prickly Pear Hooli" did Reavis Ranch from the Roger's Canyon TH; scoped out some campsites and there is running water starting a couple of miles before the ranch. Probably the best campsite, just below the cattle pen and loading shute, was a mess. GTG may post photos; horsesh*t right in the camp area; feed dumped all over the ground and based on the idiots that left this mess, we left out one option on "What do you do with toilet paper" poll.......what they did......just left it and what it was used for lie there in the open and worse yet, just a few feet from the creek! Also horsesh*t right in the creek! Definitely don't wanna camp downstram from there!

Yep, the beautiful ranch was defaced by some ignorant folks with 5 mules that don't deserve the title of cowboys or horsemen. They might have even done some poaching according to some other folks that camped at the ranch at the same time. I'll start a new post about it later tonight.

There's plenty of water at the ranch, the clear open spaces in February now have calf-high grass and everything is really green for now. It's really beautiful. Expect daytime temps in the 90's and nighttime temps in the 40's, pack accordingly.

Now then, let's get a good group rounded up and plan on enjoying ourselves. Get in here.

Thanks,
GTG

Lets see, what kind of firewater should I bring this time? Maybe some takillya for Prickly Pear Hoolie since he has an affinity toward cactus, parts of the agave are drinkable you know. Crazy

Yes we are planning on leaving early, early, I may have to sleep on someones door step to make sure they get up on time though Laughing, seeing how this person is a night owl maybe we should hike in the dark. Sleeping Hiking

Looking forward to having a lot of fun and warmer temps at night than we had in Feb., no frost on the ground in the morning.

Yes, I'll be hiking in under lamp and moonlight on Friday evening. Tomorrow I'm taking my wife to REI to get her a proper backpack and a purifying filter pump. I don't want extra fiber in my water. We'll stay Saturday and hike out on Sunday. See you all there! Smile

Well, I'm officially out. We're leaving on vacation the first week of June and the wife has some things she needs me to do in preparation for the trip.

Dang.

GTG, I bought a couple of radios at Fry's. What channel will you have yours set on? I can give you a call when I get close to the ranch.

Here's the plan -
Hooli will probably be in first and scope out a good spot for us.
When we get set up I'll have my REI Half Dome set up with an American flag hanging from it. The tent is blue and yellow. Our radios will be set at channel 1, code 6. I'll keep a radio with me for any calls sent. I plan on a trip to Circlestone and to do some exploring around the ranch as well on Saturday. We can hold the Circlestone trip until later Saturday in case those coming in on Saturday want to go too.

Post any of your thoughts and concerns and let me know.
Oh yeah, - Low impact camping -
The grass around the ranch is pretty high right now, does anyone have reservations about erecting tents on high grass or should we look for more open areas?

Let me know,
GTG

Good idea George, I will bring one of my radios too. I haven't heard hide nor hair from Jaimi so still don't know when we will be leaving, be it Friday evening or early, early Sat. morning. Looking forward to a good time and another trip to Circlestone.

I'm gonna try and get off from the TH around 8 am. I'll turn my radio on at noon, set to 1-6.
Gonna try and find a nice cleared area. Think the grass is too dry and I'd be worried about a stray spark if we camped in it. Won't set up anything tho' until others arrive and give their opinions. Of course it's understandable that Goatboy Goat , aka GTG, would want to camp in the grass and, of course, it probably wouldn't take long for him to clear a large area down to bare dirt Goat

Now, don't laugh - but I just remembered another reason why I can't go. We will celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary on Saturday. I think the wife would be rather upset if I didn't show up for that.

Husbands tend to forget small, insignificant things like that. Anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas - you know, the little days....
