Authorities are investigating more than 30 small fires along the Apache Trail in the Tonto National Forest this month.

A dozen fires were discovered Oct. 11 along a 10-mile stretch of the Apache Trail between Tortilla Flat and Apache Lake, and 19 more were reported Oct. 22.

Some of the fires were less than 3 feet in diameter while others were so large that crews were called in to extinguish them, Tonto National Forest District Ranger Art Wirtz said. None of them involved structures.

"It doesn't fit with what we typically have," Wirtz said, adding that most fires are caused by car accidents or muffler or brake problems. The investigation into the cause is ongoing and it hasn't been determined if the two sets of blazes are connected, he said.

"With all the people coming along that trail there is a good chance some tourist going through may have noticed something unusual and didn't think much about it," Wirtz said.

The Apache Trail, which is also Arizona 88, runs from Apache Junction east to Roosevelt Lake and south to U.S. 60. The paved version of the trail marked its 100th anniversary this year.

Anyone with information about the fires should call the Forest Service tip line at (602) 225-5309.
