Relieved Brockton: See ya later, alligator

A handful of onlookers were treated to a show yesterday when a gator expert wrestled a rogue reptile in a Brockton pond after it eluded police for hours.

``You just have to grab it sometimes,'' said Lt. Alan Borgal, law enforcement director for the Animal Rescue League of Boston, who was on the scene yesterday.

Michael Ralbovsky of Rainforest Reptiles Shows grabbed the 4 1/2-foot gator by the tail in Waldo Pond, a day after stunned passers-by saw two alligators in the water at D.W. Field Park.

The animal was captured after it came into shallow water, presumably to sun itself, Borgal said.

State environmental police and the Animal Rescue League are still on the hunt for the other gator.

Police are investigating whether workers from the Brockton Fair dumped the alligators when they left town because the reptiles got too big, a law enforcement source told the Herald. The Florida-based fair operator, which left Brockton Monday, could not be reached for comment.

Some officials speculated the gators, which are not native to New England, were pets that were abandoned. It is against the law to own an alligator in Massachusetts without a special permit.

There is a $500 reward for anyone with information about the scofflaw who ditched the creatures.

(Why is it these alligator stories are happening in states where I've lived??)

Got sent out to retrieve a Gila Monster, the fuss and racket the folks were making as I arrived on the scene I was wondering if it might be Godzilla. Turned out to be a gecko.
