How does State Trust Land work?

I have seen many places just north of the valley that say NO Trespassing, state trust land. But then I also see many OHV peole zooming around in there. Does anyone know how the State Trust land works?

My understanding is that State Trust Land is accessible, as long as the person has a permit.

Permits are about 20 bucks and are good for a year. If you get an AZ hunting permit, the pass is included.

If you just want to hike or ride around then you have to buy the permit. I got one last year so that I can do some sections of the AzTrail that cross the State Tust land.

They will ticket you if you don't have a permit.

CHeck with the PLIC (Public Land Information Center) downtown. They are a wealth of information. Let me know if you do not find what you are looking for there.

Correct, you need a permit from the state to use State Trust land. Most of the ATVs zooming around out there are breaking the rules. They are suppose to stay on established trails and they don't, most don't have permits either.
Because of this, most of the state trust land between Mesa and Florence Junction is closing to all motor vehicles. It is suppose to happen some time this month. Crying or Very sad

I agree Cactuscat, as long as access corridors to the wilderness are left open. No good is served by permitting quads and dirt bikes to rip all over it. The damage could be almost as extensive as overgrazing (if we would all start hunting "Slow Elk" our riparian habitats would be well served) If access to Peralta, Hieroglyphic, and Woodbury/Rogers is cut off, we will not be well served. As ASLD owns most of the US 60 frontage in there, this is an issue. Of course we need to remember their mission. It is not to preserve open space, but to maximize revenue to the State for the Dept. of Education. Sooo, we may see a lot more subdivisions like the one greeting us at Peralta Road. State Land Trust (602) 364 2753 It's the number to call to get a recreational permit mailed to your home. They are $15/individual or $20/family--the are issued for one year from the day you pay... I don't carry mine but leave it in the truck when on the land. Never had a problem when asked by ranger/officer.

Many of the areas I am aware of are mainly used by ATV's/dirt bikes and off-roading although I do see hunters. Sorry I don't know the mission of the State Land Trust dept.
