If you were on the Paria trip with me, you know that I need a smaller tent for backpacking. So, I'm looking for a 1-person tent, hopefully less than 3 lbs. I'm thinking about the Big Agnes Seedhoue 1 SL or maybe the REI Roadster.

Any suggestions or experiences with your own tents would be terrific!

I have the MSR (I think) Hubba 1- about 3 lbs and is free standing. I have plenty of room each end for gear. Vestible for gear and can cook in. Best of all sit up in it without difficulty. Packs very small.
Dislikes- while freestanding needs lots of guying out in wind, and dust blows easily under fly which does not come down very low-- I am sure to save weight.

I have a bivy but like Randy I am a gear head. Looking at the Black Diamond Lightsabre bivy at a little over a pound and packs almost to a large space blanket size.

I just ordered a Tarptent Squall after looking at Lizard's gear list. I got it with the extended sewn in floor and extended beak, total weight 32 ounces
and it will comfortably sleep 2.

All the reviews on ultralight sites, rave about these shelters.

"but like Randy I am a gear head. "

Letty, It's your fault that I ordered a new Osprey Crescent 90!!! At least, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

When I was buy, er, lurking about on Summit Hut's website I seem to recall some of the light weight Mountain Hardwear models on sale.....

We need a 12 step program for gearheads....

Here's a link to a solo tent comparative review... > http://outside.away.com/outside/gear/200409/solo_camping_tents_2.html

I'm not generally an LL Bean fan, but they have a tent called the Microlight that looks pretty nice and is just $119.00.

If you decide on the REI Roadster, I have one for sale that has been used 1X for eval & a review.
$70.00 & it's yours.

Also, I'll soon have a Golite Den 2 that I'm testing up for sale in a month or so.....

I'm partial to mountain hardwears PCT1. It's right about 3 lbs and has all sorts of great features, sets up easily, and packs down pretty small.

On sale for $109 @ Campmor...
It does appear, however, that it's closer to 3 1/2 pounds.

Scott,

I had to downsize my large 2 person tent for smaller one too so I did a bunch of research last night. It was a toss-up between the REI Roadster and Eureka Solitaire. I found the Solitaire on sale for $59.90 w/free shipping. I think there's a rebate on it to. It weighs in at a mere 2.8 pounds.

My other tent is a Eureka Apex2 and I just like their product line, functional and inexpensive.

I have an Eureka Solitaire and it has been serving me well for 2 years now. It's a great choice for people who are too closterphobic for a bivy, plus its cheap. You can get a tent now that weighs the same but no where near the price. I've had it in rain and it held up well. But keep in mind it is NO tent. Even a change of cloths in it is super rough. I'm 5'10" and can still even bring my pack inside with me when it gets nasty out. I just use a bit of my pack for some pillow support.

Roux,

Thanks for the quick review of the Solitaire. I was debating last night when I was shopping but figured it would be fine for me when backpacking. I'm barely 5'2" so I'm thinking I'll have plenty of room.

I'm quite pleased with my MtnHardware PCT1. It could be a tad longer but I fit ok.

And there is nothing wrong with the Kelty Zen, old style at Campmor for 100 or so.

That's what I've got. Paid 70 bucks at a REI garage sale. It's very cozy for one person, and a little cramped for two. The entire ceiling is mesh too, so I get to stare at the stars...... Very Happy

I really like the idea of the Tarptent Cloudburst with the extended beak and sewn in floor. There on sale right now, the tent with all the extras is $200 and it weight 2.6lbs or 42oz. This would be a little overkill for one person but you would have PLENTY of space inside.
