I would like to make another trip to Picacho Peak and/or Quartz peak.

Dates are not set yet, if you are interested, please reply here.

Picacho Peak is about 40 miles N of Tucson, The hunter trail is 2 miles ( 4 miles round trip ) and very steep ( 2000 ft elevation gain ). The last time we went as a group, it was great fun.

Quartz Peak is in the West valley ( Estrella mountian range ) and is a 5 mile round trip with a 2400 foot gain in elevation. This trail is considered remote and a 4X4 is recomended to access the trailhead.

I would like to do both of these before spring/summer arrives and it gets too hot....

Whadaya think?

Both of these are on my "want to do" list! Don't know that I can do both, but will definitely do one. Needs to be after Feb. 1 though.

I am up for doing it again! I just drove by there this weekend and was thinking that I wanted to go up there again. Definitely before it gets too hot!

I'm shocked you are concidering Picacho again! It seamed to beat you last time. It was a fun mountain to do, I'll be up to doin it again. Quarts Peak would also be cool if we could get some people with 4 wheel drive, i dont have one. Smile

I'd be up for either. Just pick a date.

I've been wanting to do Picacho Peak again since the first time I did it - just ask my hiking partners, I've been bringing it up every chance I get! Count me in for sure.

I've done Picacho and would enjoy doing it again. I've never done Quartz. Has anyone here? Trail description? I have a 4X4. I'm interested.

I think several have done Quartz. Wasn't there a group hike there little over a year or so ago? And I know cakewalk's at least been out that way; forget whether he actually got to hike Quartz Peak, but know he did get to hike, right cakewalk? Laughing

As to Picacho, I passed last year 'cause my two days at Phantom Ranch were just afew days away and I was afraid to take a chance on getting injured and not being able to make it. Hope to make up for it this year.

Cindy,
Look here for the Quartz Peak info - http://azwww.az.blm.gov/pfo/qpeak.htm
I have been out that way, but have not done the hike. I tried to find the trailhead coming in from the south. I know I was close, but it started getting dark, etc...
If the trailhead is where I think it is, 4x4 is definitely the way to go!

Trying to stir up old nitemares there hoolie??

Yeah, Ive dont the quartz peak trail... Its a great hike, good workout too...
The final 1/2 mile is boldering and trail finding. The reward at the top is excellant views of the valley and house sized boulders of pure white quartz, speckled with bits of mica.

We will need a few 4x4's to get to the trail head. I actually got my car stuck out there is soft sand on my first attempt to reach the trail.

Cakewalk, Are you sure the trail up Picacho Peak is only 2 miles? Sure seems longer than that to me! Shocked
