Link to the official trail description from NFS.
Humpreys Peak can be hiked all year round if you're are prepared for the variety of possible weather scenarios. ( freezing temps, 50 MPH winds, deadly lightning, and deep snow to name a few )
If you hike in the winter get a free pass/permit from the NFS. (only needed when Snowbowl is open)

I have done this one over 20 times. It was one of my training mountains for Colorado. I have been at the top when it was nice and warm, windy and freezing, seen so many bugs on top that nobody could last 2 minutes on the peak. I even did it at dusk once, waited till the sun set and the moon rise on a night there was a full moon. I have to say that that one was my best trip up the mountain. Seeing the moon rise on top of a mountain is increadible.
My first attempt up Humphreys was when I was 8. I got to 11,800 feet and had to stop cuz i got altitude sickness really bad.
When I was 13 I hiked Fremont Peak then went on to to Humphreys peak in the same day. We started in Locket Meadow and it was a 14 mile hike. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

I prefer the Inner Basin route, makes for a full day but that's what ya' go up there for. The first time I did it that way we camped at Locket Meadow. The next time we went up from here, that was a bit tougher, no time to acclimate (SP?) to the elevation. Really kicked me. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |
