The Paria thread is getting a bit long, so I thought I'd put this here...

I'm thinking I may just get a new pack for the Paria trip (and whatever follows). Since it's been years since I last bought a pack, I don't have much knowledge of what brands/models are reputable. I'm going to go hit some stores tonight, but if anyone has any suggestions, things to avoid, etc. I'd love to hear it.

The things I definitely want:
- internal frame
- around 5,000 cubic inches
- some sort of removable daypack type thing
- about $250 or less

The things I don't care about:
- hydration sleeve/reservoir (love my bottles)
- weight (ultralight, shmultralight)

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks

My Osprey has been a fantastic bag. The suspension system/harness fit like a glove, and the optional daybags in various sizes and shapes have been great. At 5000 c.i. they have several different options last time I checked, and they are now being carried (at least some models) at both REI and The Hiking Shack.

Also, though I do not have any experience with them personally, a couple friends swear by Granite Gear, which is also carried by the Hiking Shack. Stop in there because the guys and gals that work there are very knowledgeable, have tons of real world experience, and are a lot of help in pinpointing exactly what you need. Not to mention several of them are trained in proper fitting and custom forming of pack frames and harnesses.

Watch the weight on backapcks that have a removable top for use as a fanny pack..... + fanny packs don't hold much.

Note: 16 years ago, when I was 32, I didn't care much about extra pack weight either.

You might consider this option...
http://www.sonomaoutfitters.com/pack_acc/lowe_neutrino.html
This is a full-sized (for a day pack) pack that weighs just 1#!, and doubles as a compression sack for your sleeping bag and other "compressables".
It even includes a bladder holder & tube slot...
(I bought mine @ sierratradingpost.com for $29.95)

That way, with the day pack spec out of the way, you need not restrict your search to packs that offer the "built-in" fanny pack option.
IMO - "Fit" is everything in a pack.... that is, once you meet the capacity requirement(s).

I use it for my everyday backpack, as well... L.A. doesn't advertise it as such, but I have found mine to be waterproof. (Note: not to be submerged, I'm speaking of rain/snow)

I am using G.G. Vapor Trail now, so if a Kelty Haiku 5750 (under 4#) would interest you, I have a used one that I'd sell @ $100.00
