It was a warm 75 degrees in the southern deserts today. I took city girl and went out to play with fire which she really liked. Her parents never took her camping. She was fascinated with the stuff.
We broiled a small game hen over the coals on my backpacking grill.
But the real experiment was fire baking biscuits in a light weight steel pan. They came out perfect! The lid was in place while baking. I did not want to buy a $70 backpacking baking setup at my outdoor store. It is heavy, expensive and has many parts that can get damaged and such so I tried this and it works very well. I sat the pot on a rock and piled the coals up around it but not on top because the lid has a plastic handle.
It was a perfect winters day in the Harshaw mountains. Now we know we can bake most anything on a backpack with minimal kitchenware. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

BoyNhisDog, glad you found us! The site wouldn't be complete without an occasional story from you about an adventure or Winston's adventures.
Glad you showed city girl about fire today. Can't say I've showed a person fire for the first time. Others things yes, fire no.
As always, great to see the posts about peoples food experiments that work. Are those Bisquick or what?

No bisquick here GTG. Those are made with my own recipe of spelt flour and brown rice four. spelt is an ancient form of wheat and is non-hybridized.
This is not the first time she has used an outdoor fire but she always likes it when we do. We have been together for quite some time now.
Mike found me and I'm glad he did. I as a little taken back when everything went up in vapor. I tried to think of an email address that I could connect back up with someone but came up with a loss. Good site here though! _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

Glen-
Dang, does that look good. I'll assign camp cookie details to you. I have one of those little pack grills too. Comes in real handy over a nice bed of coals. I've toasted bagels and chilis on those things as well.

That is the truth. In fact, it's amazing how little backcountry cooking gear you actually do need. You can find some darned creative ways to cook things while out and about.
Speaking of game hens try this:
Before you set off, get two river rocks - nice and smoothe but big enough to fill the inside cavity of those hens. Heat them in the oven to around 400 degrees (it takes a while - about an hour or so). Then stuff the rock and some spices inside the hen, wrap in foil, place in a bag to keep the juices from leaking, then hit the trail. By about lunch/dinner time, those babys are done and make some darned good eating. No fire or pot's required. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

All right, now we've got a hiking chicken. We started with goats and then flying snakes, now chickens. What's next?

We all know hiking goats are very popular, flying snakes add drama, and hiking dogs can backpack garbage bags out. But hiking Game Hens make a lot of sense: They hike right along 'till just before dinner time... Are hiking Pigs next? |

I'll bet HIG has a hiking bull and I'll have an aquarium full of hiking shrimp if things keep up.
