Anybody out there hiked the entire AZT yet, or a good deal of it? I'm very interested in section hiking it, and would appreciate any advice, info, etc. Anyone else want to section hike it?

Perhaps if you can not find anyone to go the distance with you several of us might go for parts of it. MP

I have long wanted to start section hiking it, not with any great obsession, just picking up sections as possible. Do you have a time in mind?

No time in mind, yet - just thinking right now. I would like to hike the sections in order, though - preferably from the South, heading North.

when you start at the southern end it would be smart to have a large group. there are lots of predators in that area and they don't walk on four legs. but are called coyotes! would be interested in the trek keep me in mind.

Hiking from South to North would probably be best, soon and in groups. Things may continue to heat up down there and may only get worse.

Townsend wrote an excellent account of his South to North AZT hike. The book is titled Crossing Arizona. It's an excellent read as a precursor to the actual undertaking!

Colin, I recently read his "Walking the Yukon" and it is good as well.

Yeah, I've read "Crossing Arizona", as well as "On The Arizona Trail". I'm not too worried about those "predators" since they mostly stick to the easiest routes, and the AZT doesn't - but I'm not planning on hiking that area alone!

These things don't happen unless you schedule them.

I'd be interested in floating a date for an initial attack. How about mid March? What do you think of maybe a 4 night, five day, 6-10 mile days??? effort starting at the southern terminus? Do you think there would be a problem with snow in the Huachuca's? I would like that stretch to be with a group also. some strange folk walking around the woods there. Hopefully there will still be water in the wild parts then.

If Desert Dweller finds his way here, He'll have some Huachuca Mtns/AZT tales for us, including Entrants/INS encounters in the middle of the night.

Glen, it's on my list to read! I just finished The Rescue Season about the PJ's at Denali, I've started Complete Walker IV, and have Fire at the Rim and The Ascent of Rum Doodle sitting on the nightstand...when those are finished, I get to pick up Walking the Yukon

I would love to get a good start on the trail like that - unfortunately, there's alot of ???????'s in my life right now, so I don't know if I'll be able to take off like that in March. I should know more by the end of this month.
