A spate of severe thunderstorms northeast of the Valley caused at least two mudslides Friday night along the Beeline Highway, closing southbound traffic for several hours.
The state Department of Public Safety closed Arizona 87 south of Rye between mileposts 225 and 230 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, DPS spokesman Steve Volden said.
Southbound traffic was diverted back north toward Payson. Volden recommended travelers heading out of the Valley to Payson take U.S. 60 east toward Globe and proceed north on Arizona 88.
The mudslides were caused by rain falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour over part of the area burned by the recent "Willow" fire, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
That portion of west-central Gila County was under a flash-flood warning until 9:30 p.m. Friday. The National Weather Service warned that additional runoff may cause more flooding. Officials with the Arizona Department of Transportation and DPS worked Friday night to clear the area and reopen the highway.
Volden expected the road to be reopened before daybreak today but did not have an exact time. |

with the way it was raining Monday afternoon, I'm surprised to not see more of these, this monsoon season. it was really coming down hard! When I left snowflake monday at 2p i had an adventure getting to concho highway. at least 6 places where running water was crossing the dirt roads. When it rains- it pours I can't believe the 70mph speeds of people heading down the hill from Payson. People don't even have the sense to put their lights on- so you can see them in the downpour! It petered out by the time we got to Rye- though. Looks like we need a Texas or Baja hurricane to get any rain to reach the valley _________________ Your life is dyed the color of your imagination |
