I'd like to but it's kind of expensive. I'm not sure if I'd want to spend that sort of money for a nights thrill. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

The Phoenix Rock Gym is $15 per person if you rent their climbing shoes and harness, or $10 if you have your own equipment. Maybe it is better to find a real rock wall somewhere--it's just that doing so requires some equipment and other people who know how to use it, and I'm pretty slack on both counts!

I drop by the Phoenix Rock Gym in Tempe every few weeks. They have a great selection of high walls, as well as a good bouldering section. Anyone know how it compares to the others in the area?
I'd definitely be interested in an indoor climbing event--maybe I'll arrange one.... |
Jeff12633,
Sounds like an idea. Who'd be up for an evening at PRG?
Cactuscat, Shi, MattGilbert, to name a few, might be interested. Let me know next time anybody's going. |
Is it possible to go to just watch? I'd like to see this before I attempt it.
So if you make plans to go and I can tag along, let me know ok!

Hey guys, I just met someone who climbs at PRG twice a week. We'll be there Tuesday night if anyone wants to drop by. |

I don't think they'd object to you just observing.

You can certainly go and check the place out. I like PRG, but don't ignore Climbmax http://www.climbmaxaz.com/ it's got some great bouldering and a few fun additions like a rope ladder. It's not as big as PRG, but it's still a decent place.
Incidently...if any of you have purchased the Entertainment Book, perhaps from a high school kid for a fundraiser, they each have half off coupons for both gyms.
On my list for this year is to find a bouldering area in Usery...though it's on hold until after the move. _________________ -Colin

I've found the upper reaches of Squaw Peak to be excellent for class 4 climbing practice. There are also countless possibilities along the ridgelines surrounding the main peak.
I also noticed last week while hiking Picacho that the walls surrounding the amphitheater just below the summit ridge would be a great bouldering and class-5 climbing area--hundreds of lines from easy to devillish! Most, however, would require a top rope, and I didn't check out the options up top as far as anchoring goes. (Nor do I know the park's policies on roped or aid climbing.)

Let's do it outdoors where it's free and much better. I've got all the gear needed and even a few extra harnesses that will fit some skinny people (my old harnesses). _________________

I've been doing my bouldering exercise indoors because (1) I'm usually alone and like having a safe place with lots of people around, and (2) the routes laid out in the gym make it easy to measure my strength and skill level. I'd definitely like to take it outside when the opportunity arises, though.

I haven't done outdoor in a very long time. I think I was 16 the last time I did it. I went to a place in the Dry Lake hills on the back side of Mount Elden in Flagstaff. There are some really neat climbs there. _________________ Mountains are there to be climbed!

Daryl, I like that word "free" and there's no substitute for real rock. There's plenty of bouldering problems all around (use a spotter, be safe) and I've seen many places that are bolted for top-roping. Cave trail, off Peralta has (unfortuately) many bolted pitches, and I think a lot of places good for top-roping. I'll have to go look. _________________ What a magnificent time to LIVE! - Everett Ruess.
