Apparently there's a $75 dollar fee to register them. It's required unless you stick to the sub 1 mile range FRS channels on the unit, otherwise...gotta pay up.

Fines for failure to do so can go up to $10,000.00 per day.

So is your unit registered?

(Wait till Howard Stern hears about this...)

Haven't received mine yet....and when I do, figure the only time I'll use them is the WFW; then I'll say, "Gee officer, one of the folk out there in the canyon asked me to hold this for them...his name is GTG (or Stan, or Mike) and his address, phone # and description is......ugly cuss!"

You only need it for the GMRS channels.

I didn't, but I only use the FRS channels Wink

Not that I encourage breaking the law...but how would anyone know whether you've registered your walkie talkie or not? Furthermore, how serious can the enforcement on something like that be? How does anyone prove you're using FSR or GMRS?

I just can't imagine hiking in the boonies, a ranger stops you and precedes to give you the shake down looking for a registration certificate or permit for that "loaded" walkie talkie. As the cliche goes..."don't they have real criminals to chase?"

I think the real issue with 'licensing' these things is overcrowding in the radio freq bandwidth with all our wireless stuff. Does it really matter if you're 10 miles from civilization? Anybody know otherwise?

OK, Got my two GMRS radios and sent my application and fee in over the internet this afternoon 'cause Hoolli is a law abiding citizen and I figure with Mike, GTG, etal planning on using my name in vain I'd better.

actually AJ it is OK. People do it all the time and it's perfectly legal. If you are not on a municipal street you don't have to be liscensed to operate a motor vehicle. How do you think they get away with making dirtbikes and quads and such for children?

...but you do have to have the vehicle registered.
