Looking for a water filter also. I am very familiar with the MSR mini-works so I'm leaning towards that, but any recommendtions out there?

Tim, I need my equipment to be simple and to work great. The MSR Miniworks EX is in my opinion the best thing on the market. One of it's great features is the ease of cleaning the filter when done and how fast it pumps the water. I'd say go for it, you won't regret it!

I agree that a filter that allows you to "clean" it in the field is a must, so the MSR fits THAT bill. For the above reason, I would avoid PUR/Katadyn.

For the most part, though, I'd recommend Aqua Mira or Polar Pure (chemical treatments) and save yourself about a pound.

I always carry Aqua Mira with me when I don't carry a water filter. After I use the MSR filter I'm just amazed how much sludge and dirt it picks up. You can't do that with just using purification drops. Who wants to drink brown water?

I have to agree about the MSR Miniworks. I've had mine for about 5 years and still no problems whatsoever. Very easy to take apart and clean, pumps pretty fast, and is a great filter overall. You would be very happy with it.

the miniworks is the way to go plus it screws directly onto any nalgene widemouth canteen or msr dromlite water bag so there is no spilling while you pump
