Speaking of fishing, anyone have or know of any links for free nautical charts? _________________ "IRONMAN" cometh, hiketh, destroyeth |

yes, but as we all know, the Palomar knot is strongest, retaining up to 95% of line strength. Any of you guys have seen a packable fly rod and reel combo on sale lemme know. Im looking for Orvis, St. Croix, or similar quality. _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

Here is my setup. This whole thing with lures weighs less than a pound. The rod is 5' long (2-piece) and the action is very sweet for the micro lures. The other side of the box has an assortment of Panther Martin spinners.
Loomis rod
Diawa SpinmaticZ-500T reel
Assorted lures

my current setup is a Sigma Titanium (graphite-96%) 5 ft. rod with a Diawa Jupiter-X reel. 2 piece. 4lb. test Trilene super. I was looking at multi piece fly rod combos and they run $400-700 for quality gear. ouch! I still believe fly fishing is far superior than spinning, for many reasons. If you havent tried it, you should. Gary Loomis is a nice stick, my man... and if I find that quarter I'm gonna keep it! _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

Has anyone ever used a bamboo fly fishing rod? I saw one on sale at an Abercrombie and Fitch (back when they sold outdoor stuff - many moons ago) and the thin was like $2,000.00.
I've heard from aficionados that bamboo is the best and most exciting material to use - I'm just curious if anyone has ever used a really nice one.
I found this rod after a quick Google search - as an example of what I'm talking about. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

They are awesome looking for sure. And they are slooooooooow. I know some guys who are fanatics about split cane.
I have a little St Croix 2-piece 7' 3 Wt. Awesome for small streams and sneaking up. I use an Orvis Battenkil barstock reel with it.
I do usually take a clear float and some flies to use with the spinning gear as well. You can get a fly way out on a high mountain lake with that method and you can float them downstream to unwary fish too. Spinning gear is definately more versital in an all around way. You can cover more water but fly fishing is very cool. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys

yes they are both cool. Something has to be said about catching a 9" brookie in a stream only 3' wide and 6" deep with a fly that you tied with your own hands, with all the precision of a surgeon. Just cool....
Glen, we should plan a fish/backpack somewhere away from the confines and even bring a 3rd party to introduce him to the art... _________________ http://www.arizonahikers.com/board/albums/albwb18/BRIDGE.sized.jpg

If you can wait till my back is healed up - I'll volunteer for that. I've always wanted to try fly fishing - the aesthetic appeal not least among my reasons.
Fly fishing just seems like an excellent hobby to have. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

Well that sounds like fun. I don't get out fishing nearly enough. I think the last time was up in Durango last year and then a place that I'm sworn to secrecy.
Durango has the Animas River running through town. I stay at a hotel on the river and buy a license at City Market across the street. That river is full of Rainbows and big Browns. Lots of pocket water.
The "other" place, a small stream, is very active right now so say the secret reports. One guy caught 75 smallies (small mouth bass) a couple of weeks ago. I was there last year and while I didn't have quite that luck I caught plenty. Those are pound for pound some of the greatest fighters you can catch. They jump clear out of the water. They will take both flies and lures.
I'd like to get up on the Black sometime. Wandering along a small stream has always been my favorite way to fish.
Anyway my next trek is not a fishing trip but it will be a huge adventure. So after that I need to get serious about a fishing trip. _________________ Seize from every moment its unique novelty and do not prepare your joys
