Having just finished my first backpacking trip and having a new value for light weight items and packing mules I'm left wondering what luxury items are being packed by others.

What 'extras' do you bring and why?
Where did you get it, how much does it weigh and what was the price?

The luxury item which seemed to be the biggest hit on the Diva Tour backpacking trip was the "hammock", it was also the item that as I loaded my 40 pound pack into the car almost got left behind!

But I brought it along because I told Susan I had one and would bring it, and was well worth it once we got there!

It was purchased at WalMart for a whopping $8.99, weighs 1.25 pounds, and says it will hold up to 300 pounds...we were not brave enough to try the three of us to test that part out, but we do know it comfortably holds one diva gal and her dog! Very Happy

I'm definitely going to add that one to my luxury item list. It's getting longer... thanks Tracy...

...kitchen table, hammock, Thermarest chair, backpacking stool, kitchen sink... this is going to get embarrassing. Anyone know of a one pound tent/sleeping bag combo?

the hammock idea is a good one. I use it for my sole sleeping quarters in the summer, made of parachute nylon and weighs 1.1 with 10ft. of 8mm rope.

the other luxury is a 1 liter platypus filled with Merlot, or Chiraz.
My summer weight pack totals under 13 lbs, even with water and food.
One of these days I will leave a total gear list posted Very Happy

See? The minimalists will gather. I told you all. You all owe me a buck... 13lbs?? OMG... no friggin way. My daypack weighs like 20. I did weigh my backpack for the first time (begrudgingly so). It was an even 45 lbs (no comments Randy...)

Hammock instead of a tent, sleeping bag, pillow and thermarest?-----yeah! Diane, how much does your nifty sleeping bag weigh?

Yeah, but you all found the Pinot in the "magical creek". Remember? Of course, someone had to schlepp the empty out.

Did you weigh it when you got home? Did it weigh something closer to 50 lbs? Wink

platypus with wine = no cute little cork screw from Williams & Sonoma!!! okay, I can leave that at home....pack is getting lighter plus I'm getting more comfy and smarter! Tracy's Walmart special was the best hammock I have ever hung in. I could sleep in that.

We probably can't count on the magical waters all the time.

when I bring my 1 lb. hammock, it negates the use of therma-rest, pillow and such. Now, Im not saying packing light is cheap, it seems these companys out there preach alot about lightweight... have you picked up a Backpacker mag lately? the words "lighten up, go lighter, and/or drop 20 pounds" are on every cover!! Problem is, half the weight cost twice as much! d'oh!

No sheeet Sherlock. lol. I'm happy doing my 45 lbs unless we're talking miles here.

I have a 1 lb-ish +40 sleepng bag on the way. Snugpak Jungle Bag. Looks quite good. We'll see. That, combined with your hammock, would be the kitties meow.
