Well, as of last night I am officially taking myself out of circulation for anything remotely athletic for the next 2 months.

My back just hurts like hell and there is nothing I can do about it other than rest/stretch/therapy.

I was doing much better so decided to play some basketball last night. That was clearly a bad plan. I was doing just fine till I cut a little too hard when guarding someone - and that just left me on the floor in massive pain for 10 minutes or so.

Now I can't even walk across a room.

I hate being injured. Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate. Did I mention I don't like it either?

This sucks. I am not even going to risk attempting anything till I am close to what I consider 100%. It's just not worth the pain of re-injuring it all over again.

So now I'm out of hiking during the prime season of the year.

Did I mention that this sucks big time? Or that I hate it? Or that I'm pissed?

Well it does, I do and I am.

Jared, go see a chiropractor that uses the "activator" method. I was in a similar situation a number of years ago. This dude had me fixed up in a couple of weeks. It's a much less painful method, and is quite effective.

How long is your nose right now?

Been there, done that.

The problem lies with my hip-flexor muscles. They get very stressed because of my height and musculature (my legs are disproportionately large for my build - but then again, if you've hiked with me you know the advantages there). Occasionally my hip flexor muscles get over stressed and go into a state of spasm - 24/7. They begin to pull on other muscles and bones and pretty soon everything is all out of whack. The primary problem is that as a result a couple of nerves that come out of my spine into my legs become inflamed - that's the primary source of the pain. As long as those muscles are freaking out there isn't a darned thing I can do about it but take relaxants, pain killers and anti-inflamatory drugs.

I can do therapy - but that just makes it hurt more. Stretching seems to help a little and light exercise works a little as well. But, like I said - I've tried it all before and the only thing that has really worked is rest and time.

Oh, and not being a bonehead and going out and doing more than I'm physically capable of too soon. But who wants to do a darned fool thing like that?

And one more thing: I need to get back to 100% as quickly as possible, and not just for hiking reasons. We're expecting a new addition to the family around October 5 - and I have to be in shape to help take care of the wife and kids.

Sounds like you're in quite the pickle there Jared. We can chop those legs down a bit for ya. I was contemplating doing that on the ridgeline hike. Didn't have my camping saw with me at the time though.

I think you better start to consider being a real man like Stan while you have your youth. Hehehe Shades

Hey Olesma-
Would orthotics help your problem- They might help light up your spine, even different shoes could make a difference.
Maybe not, but, thought I would throw it out there.

I know the mere mention of Orthotics makes Tom giddy.

Well, the x-rays show the possibility of a herniated disk.

Joy.

They're working on getting approval for an MRI - that should provide definitive proof for the cause.

All I can hope for is that this won't require surgery. But no matter what it looks like it's going to be a long time for full recovery.

2 weeks later and I'm still in a hell of a lot of pain. This is going to be a fun spring.

Well Jared, if'n you can make it all the way to Reavis next weekend, with all the sharp objects and ta-kill-ya that will be there, we could make it a very quick and cheap resolution to your problems... shorter legs, and one less disc... no problem...
